A game as ancient as feudal Japan itself.

Sword of the Samurai, a 1980s classic mix of strategy and action, where you set out to conquer the feudal Japan, is available for Windows and Mac OS X on GOG.com, for only $5.99.

In Sword of the Samurai, you will be part of the culture of feudal Japan, and you must learn to live by its rules. To succeed as a samurai, you must think like the samurai. Learn when to leave your sword in its sheath, when to draw it - and what to do with it once it’s drawn. You will fight duels, lead troops on the battlefield, and defend your family against assassins and kidnappers. If you are courageous and honorable, you may advance to become the head of your clan, and warlord of your province. If you master diplomacy and generalship, and outmaneuver your rivals, you may even become Shogun - absolute ruler of Japan. But remember that in all cultures power corrupts - and those who seek absolute power don’t always play by the rules.

There's always room for another MicroProse classic in your collection, so why don't you treat yourself to a nice digital copy of Sword of the Samurai, for only $5.99 on GOG.com!

keeveek: Romance of the Three Kingdoms series when?! ;P
Oh how I wish those games were available on GoG. Let's hope they see your post.

Mr.Frost: I understand some people would think $6 is too much for a game this age. If that's your case, I would suggest at least wishlisting it and wait for a sale. I assure you it's totally worth it.
I get the feeling they'd be waiting for a sale anyway if it was two bucks.

I think it'd require Tecmo Koei coming aboard. You could try making contact with the American ... branch?

karnak1: Undoubtedly, one of the best strategy games of all time. Yet, 5$ is a bit much for a game this old.

It it was 2$ I'd have bought it already. Guess I'll have to wait until it drops, just like Covert Action.
How can it at the same time be "one the best [insert genre] games of all time" and not worth 6 bucks ?
Sigh...

NoNewTaleToTell: I've heard of this game but never played it nor seen any photos of of it until today.. The premise is interesting and it's not set in "ye olde generic middle ages", so I'm interested. Based purely on the photos, it reminds me slightly of King of Dragon Pass, for anybody that's played both, are they at all similar?
strategy + action + some roleplay? It reminds me of Defender of the crown (which is a GOOD thing by my book)

Cool :)

Because opinions? We deserve to get ripped on like any other community, especially Reddit's subreddits, but let's also be real - people have different opinions, and release threads are a place to post them.
GOG,

Please, please, please add all the gorgeous images as a wallpaper download extra - then I will buy it...
or just tell me where I can download them, and to thank you I will buy it...
or ignore me and I'll probably end up buying it anyway! :)

Thanks

BlueKronos: Interesting release, another Microprose release I missed in my early days of PC Gaming, but I was addicted to Pirates! for some time so thank you for the comments on it's play being similar to Pirates. I'll definitely have to give this one a try soon.

Licurg: This isn't just similar, it was designed as the spiritual successor of Pirates! , and it's better in every way too .
Sid from Pirates! was involved with this game.

Opinions are all fine and dandy, but as far as opinions go the sempiternal "this is old, therefore it should be free (or so cheap as to be indistiguishable thereof)" that pops up every time a classic is released is quite a stupid one.
Equating age with worthlessness is, well, pretty much retarded.
Although I guess it would be a boon to the budgets of museums worldwide if that way of thinking would take over the antiques market.

One of the best games of all time. I spent hours playing this when I was younger. The march up from a young samurai to shogun of all Japan is something I miss from those days and now an official release. What I have been waiting for all this time.

For those who haven't played or wondered, this game has remarkable depth and multiple replays are worth the time to go through. Each time wanting to found a longer dynasty. If you are into strategy you will like it quite a bit. The game holds up. If you think the graphics are lower quality, well it is an old game but don't let that fool you. There is such a great amount of depth to what you can do. Do you want to be honorable and noble victor to stay the course? Do it. Do you want to double cross everyone to attain supremacy? Do it. Do you want to lead an army to kill off your own lord, chase him into his castle and assassinate him in broad daylight? Do it (though not advised). The action is a bit off and the strategy isn't the most intuitive but once you play the game you will quickly adore what it has to offer.

A quick note for early on progress, 1) A bigger army has more to do with your strength then anything else though all attributes are considered 2) Marry as quickly as possible. Should you die you can continue playing as long as you have an heir. These factors are also important to consider end game. The stronger you are and the younger you are as you become shogun the better your kingdom will last.

BUY THIS GAME!!!!! No, not tomorrow. What are you waiting for? You would be surprised just how much depth, how much a view of japan at the time, and how you get to basically run your own jidaigeki film.

(Side note: I'm completely biased. I love this game.)

$6 (or whatever it is where you are) for one of the best Historical Strategy games ever is not expensive.

And don't be put off by the blocky graphics, they are all really well drawn and add a lot to the games authentic ancient Japanese atmosphere. If ever a game was so NOT about it's graphics, this is the one.

Huge replay value, varied and tricky to master gameplay. It's a true classic, one that all gamers should at least try a few times before deciding it is not for them (as it won't be for everyone). But if you are someone it clicks with, it will be on your hard drive next to X-com (Microprose) and Civ (whatever version) forever.

This is one of those games that really needed an update or two, but never got it.
