Retro done right.

Shovel Knight, an action-platformer truly worthy of its NES roots, that delivers fun gameplay, great design, and a tide of memories in perfectly captured 8-bit style, is available on GOG.com for $14.99.

There has been way too many games recently aiming to cash in on our nostalgia without ever delivering what they promise: a real throwback to the classic gaming ideas and authentic retro feeling. Not this time! Here, even the story is perfectly nostalgic. The shovel-wielding hero has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent the hero from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… this one is for you!

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly! With classic NES-era platforming gameplay, great humor, excellent level design, and perfectly captured graphical style of old, this amazing little gem offers to take you on a nostalgia trip you won't soon forget.

Prepare to jump, dig, dig-jump, and jump-dig in the amazing limited-palette realm of Shovel Knight, for $14.99 on GOG.com.
Got the game last night and have been having fun playing it. The only issue so far is my SF4 Fightpad didn't work. I thought it would have if the game supports 360 controllers.

However an old adapter I have that lets Saturn controllers work on PC does. So I've been playing it with that.

Fever_Discordia: DID Sim City 4 cause that much commotion? The only noise I remember was the complaints that it was twice as much as the Steam price for such an old game, that and people being weirded out that CS3000 had been skipped!
Did you block out all the good comments that were being made? ;) There were 19 pages of comments which had not happened in roughly forever, so that's what I consider a "commotion". ;)

Night Dive has a lot of the older "hidden gem" releases covered nowadays, and GOG won't always show interest in a game, especially an unknown one, unless they believe it will sell well and has a significant number of wishlist votes - those factors (plus the Humongous Entertainment mess) are some that have put me off a little of working hard on trying to dig up difficult rights. (Plus I have to earn my own money/make a living.)

Part of my philosophy now is to go after some of the obscure games once a lot of the wishlist items high up have been "completed". There are still numerous titles from publishers already here that need to show up, and it's a little easier to at least try because you don't have to snoop around a lot and hope you found the right people.

That being said, I fully support those who continue the researching of rights.

Err.. I meant 'SC3000', not 'CS3000' obviously! - I blame Adobe!
on a related note, the Settlers pack being on sale only reminds me that the first one is still AWOL!

The work you and IAmSinistar have done to bring stuff here has been amazing, thanks for everything you've done even if you don't feel like doing anymore - it's surely someone else turn anyway, right? :-D
Hi guys,
it's probably not the best place to post this message but...
Do you how much time the GoG support need to answer to a request ? I've got a problem when I have purchase Shovelknight, and I was wondering when I can expect an answer from the customer service...
Thanks for your response.

catpower1980: I don't know if someone has already posted this link but here is an article about the making-of of the game on Gamasutra, it's quite interesting:
http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/DavidDAngelo/20140625/219383/Breaking_the_NES_for_Shovel_Knight.php
I hope it will be available soon on the 3ds european eshop, that's the kind of game to play on a handheld console :)
Thank you very much for posting that. It was indeed a very interesting read.
Thank you for the answer, cyboff.
Can anybody who has already bought it tell me whether a controller is essential for playing this game or if it is just as possible to use keyboard & mouse? Thanks.

you can play it with keyboard - you can rebind keys, everything works!
but you know - it is platformer - so it is always better to play with controller...

Ok, thanks. One of these days I'll have to get me a controller...
Finished the first stage, and I already love this game.

When I'm done with BattleBlock Theater I'm definitely playing this all the way through. Now I'm wondering if there's a hard mode.

Firebrand9: I'd recommend a PS2 controller with a USB adapter (Alternate). It's a cheap solution, works well, PS2 controllers are durable as hell, and PS2 D-pads are great.
avatar
cyboff: thx, it can be a winner:D But have to check first if it is supported on Mac too...
I just looked at the package and they mention no official support of OSx, only Windows incarnations. Probably because OSx is ~4% of the market last I checked.

But, it's USB, so I don't see why it wouldn't work. And, if it doesn't, there's USB Overdrive which allegedly will make it compatible. There's evidence that this will work here :

Edit :
As a footnote, you realize Shovel Knight is a Windows game right? It's rendered and deals with input via DirectX; IE - Not even remotely Mac compatible. I'm assuming you're looking for something that will work in either OS.

Niggles: I wouldnt say KS is bad, its more the case good number of devs seem to automatically supply Steam keys and provide no other option to backers (some do offer DRM free as an option but notice ther'es a rising number who think supplying a Steam key - while the game itself is drm free they seem to think this method is good enough for the DRM free crowd)

Lodium: I think it got something to do that alot of people think Steam is DRM free when its not.
Yes steam do have DRM free games wich you can backup, but MOST games on steam are NOT DRM free
And i dont mean multiplayer games.
So the devs on kickstarter are probably asuming a steam key is good enough.
Its a pretty lousy way to cheapskate the backers - not everyone has a Steam account let alone create or install one...(corrected something for you haha)
Shovel Knight will be breaking new ground.
