Never Deal with a Dragon!

Shadowrun Returns, a classy turn-based RPG set in one of the most iconic Sci-Fi worlds where cyberpunk meets fantasy, sporting excellent character development mechanics and a sleek visual style drawing you right into the dark and dangerous Seattle metroplex, is available 40% off on GOG.com, for Windows and Mac OS X. That's $11.99 for the first 48 hours.

People will tell you about the word "Shadowrun". They'll explain that it describes the act of falling off the grid to perform some shady doings for a power that prefers to stay anonymous. Like one corporation trying to silently eliminate some key "assets" of another. Or a high-profile magician in need of some fresh virgin blood. Or the law going after someone that would normally be out of their reach, because of that whole corpo-extraterritoriality thing. Get it? That kind of stuff. But I'll tell you this man, I think that's not where the word originates. I've been around for a long time, and I've seen some things no one was ever supposed to see. I know things that you generally wouldn't want to know. Dangerous, that kind of knowledge, a health hazard if you catch my drift. So, believe me when I tell you: it's not actually "shadowrun". It's "shadow-run". A word describing the true hierarchy of power in our good old sixth world. This whole planet is now being run by shadows whose motivation and goals guys like you and me won't ever understand. I don't even mean the dragons. There's something else out there. Something… different.

Shadowrun Returns, a single player, turn-based tactical RPG taking place in a fan-favorite cyberpunk slash fantasy setting. Enter the amazingly depicted futuristic Seattle metroplex, and embark on your mission to uncover the mystery of a series of gruesome killings. Who knows what you'll discover? In the world of Shadowrun nothing is what it seems at first glance. With deep and involving storyline, top-notch turn-based tactical combat mechanics, and deep skill-based character development system, this vibrant imaginative role-playing game just keeps on giving!

Whether you are a die-hard fan of the pen&paper predecessor, or you're just looking for an extensive computer RPG experience, you can't go wrong with Shadowrun Returns, for only 11.99 on GOG.com. The 40% off release discount offer last for 48 hours only, that's until Thursday, December 12, at 10:59AM GMT.
It does sound like it would make the most sense to wait for the Dragonfall.

tinyE: That's a rather small download for a game that looks that good. Maybe I could run it after all.
You could run it on a toaster, the only 3d objects in the game are the characters.

Oh, then at 11.99 it's 10.99 too much? :P I'm JOKING!
Waited for this a long time, got very disappointed by Microsoft´s DRM-only-Philosophy and now it´s here!

Well, that´s an instabuy for me... ;)

Crosmando: Also the character system is really disappointing, especially when they had the Shadowrun P&P system to work with.
Awwww shit. The sequence system I remember from Shadowrun P&P 2nd ed is one of the best combat system in my opinion, it puts to shameful misery any turn based system in any videogame I know (yeah Fallout, I love you but it doesn't mean you don't suck on some aspects). I knew 'Shadowrun returns' was simplified from what I heard, but if they really didn't take advantage of the RPG it is really stupid.

Telika: Is this an RPG in the sense of being an RPG, or is it Fallout Tactics ?
Hey you !

Instabuy! I really want to reward the devs for having the persistence to convince Microsoft to allow them to release this DRM-free.
Great release! Nice to see SRR finally landing here. Already have it on Steam myself, but top recommendation for anyone looking for an old-school, tactical RPG. Campaign is linear, but it has a nice story and serves as a nice introduction to a world of Shadowrun. Upcoming DLC - more like an old fashioned expansion pack by the looks of things; bigger, better, improved - promises to be more open world and less linear. I'm talking about Downfall and I hope GOG.com offers it to us when it comes out in January.

Save games? Upcoming patch will deal with those pesky checkpoints by allowing us to save anywhere.

Mods? There is some quality stuff already, but don't expect campaigns running into double digits just yet. Modding community is busy making UGC (user generated content, SRR campaign modules in other words) and they are mostly releasing episodic stuff so far. Look them up on Steam Workshop and Nexus site.

Once again, great job!
Wish this came out here day one, not paying $12 for it again. Maybe if there's a nice bundle with the expansion when that comes out.

Telika: Also skimmed through the totalbiscuit video, he mentions a lot of lot of (decent) writing, so this may also hint at something RPGey. He draws parallels with fallout and such, and although I'm not sure the game's linearity allows such comparisons, it's still reassuring a bit.
It's like XCOM but with more story and some dialog choices. It has RPG elements, but I would mainly call it a strategy game, personally. Maybe the expansion will be different in this regard, but I doubt it.

Alas, bought it already. But may others benefit from the description.

Generally speaking, I'm annoyed by all the "RPGs" that are only about "well, you could tackle this next corridor's mob with either arrows or an axe, so, see, customisation, lvelling, total roleplay".

Turn-based diablo-likes are still hack'n'slash.

YES! This has been a great week. I was thrilled to check GOG this morning and see this game was released. I voted for this title on the community wishlist, and have been waiting to purchase a DRM-Free version on GOG.

This was an immediate insta-buy! Thank you to all of the groups who made this possible. We as fans and consumers appreciate the hard work and dedication.

Actually, SRR isn't even all that combat-centric, except for the last "dungeon". There are hardly any trash mobs, at the very least, and some of the combat environments have some pretty creative elements.
Better late than never. Did any of the backers that backed this because they thought it was going to be DRM free get GOG keys?
Wishlisted :D
Nice release, wishlisted for now.
Good releases lately. Wishlisted for now, will buy at some point.
