Free Mars, or die trying!

Red Faction, a critically acclaimed and extremely revolutionary *wink* first-person shooter with destructible terrain and a close-range hard Sci-Fi setting, is available 70% off on GOG.com, as a part of our Red Faction 1+2 Bundle deal. That's only $2.99 for the first 72 hours!

You are Parker, a weary miner who works for the corrupt Ultor Corporation. You reside on Mars, sometime in the future, and when a plague spreads through the mining community, some of the Ultor employees uncover a massive conspiracy. Thus ensues a battle by a group of lowly workers, provoked to uprise by your own actions and to expose the deadly experiments Ultor has unleashed onto its work force. History will judge you. Make sure your faction wins, so its your people who get to write the history books.

Red Faction was a very big leap forward in the FPS genre. It introduced many new technical features such as location-based damage system, real-time skeletal deformation, advanced physics simulation, destructible environment and more. The unprecedented (at the time) interaction with the environment creates a very strong feeling of immersion that is very impressive even by today's standards. With an engaging story to tell, a unique set of features such as location-based damage system, real-time skeletal deformation, operational land, sea, and air vehicles, advanced physics simulation, and destructible environment, it's safe to say the game well deserved all the critical acclaim it got.

Play your part in the history of Mars in Red Faction, for only $2.99 on GOG.com. The special 70% off release bundle offer lasts only until Friday, February 14, at 10:59AM GMT. The games are also available separately, 60% off.

Azilut: Question for those who've played these - I'm not normally a fan of shooters at all, but sometimes enjoy them if they've got something else going for them besides the shooting (e.g. strong theme/atmosphere - Realms of the Haunting, Undying, etc.) Should I be interested in these, or are they pretty much just doing the shooter thing?
Red Faction plays similar to Unreal but on Mars and the guns/ physics feel different. It'll probably be uninteresting if you don't enjoy shooting things.

That's what I needed to know. Thanks!

*pew pew*

IMO, the rail gun is still the best weapon ever to be featured in an FPS. :)

Judging from the number of Parker corpses littering the floor, I suspect you're right. ;)

wait theyve included the MP?! That was a PS2 exclusive?!!
I wasn't planning on spending much more on GOG anytime soon thanks to my backlog. However, with this and other THQ titles potentially coming, well.... sorry wallet. That being said, having both Red Factions and Sin in my library makes me a very happy man.

I was actually thinking about the crack shot mercs you encounter in the later stages of Red Faction 1. Those guys plus rail guns kept my quick load button busy. XD

IIRC, Red Faction 1 PC does have multiplayer. Red Faction 2 PC famously didn't implement it but did include arena style maps you could have bot matches with.

I bet the GOG release is the same but I won't know until I purchase them later tonight.
Red Faction 1 does have MP and it was active for many years. It might still be active with some old fans in fact.

Google for this: Purefaction

to find out more including some current status info hopefully.

Actually, I was being lazy... here you go:

http://purefaction.org

I did a little homework and it sounds like there is just a small community that still plays using the pure faction mod which can still be downloaded from the above link. I'm not sure what "primetime" is for the game but posts I read mentioned at least one server having 16 to 18 players on it during primetime most nights. These posts were on the game's Steam forum and dated as recently as December of this past year.

So it looks like if you want to install purefaction and give it a go you may find some games even after all these years.

Worthy of note is Red Faction II has MP bots although no online MP from what I read. I'd forgotten that even though I've played that one all the way through years ago. So that's pretty cool too for folks who like death matching offline.

Just an added bit of trivia: Red Faction 1 on Playstation 2 does not have MP but it does have MP bots unlike the PC version in which sadly they never implemented them.

I've heard that the Red Faction games have a (probably subtle/unofficial) story connection to the Descent games? Curious if anyone can clarify that, as I've always wondered what that could be.

Glad to be of service. :D
I liked the original Red Faction more than I thought I would when I replayed it 5 years ago or so. Happy to buy it for so cheap.

were you thinking of this:

wikipedia extract:
"Descent 4 was a game being developed by Volition as part of the Descent game franchise, as a prequel to Descent. However, it was cancelled and its technologies, and some of the plot, were incorporated into Red Faction. Examples include the main character Parker as well as the GeoMod engine."

Pretty sure they confirmed RF started life as Descent 4 (main character in D4 was Parker). Eventually Volition realized the game they were making wasn't really a Descent and would be better for shedding the connection. It happened pretty early in dev. D4 was going to be a prequel and you can see where it might fit in if you really squint (Ultor -> PTMC, for instance).
I was always curious about these back when they were new, but these days I think I'm more interested in the latter games. I've have been playing trough Armageddon, and wouldn't mind getting a GoG version should one turn up in the future.

Still think it's a solid release, and hope Thursday is as good to us as the last two release days.
