Zacron: Right, Myst: Masterpiece Edition was a Hi-Rez version of Myst with updated Graphics, Audio, and a few added features, like faster screen transitions and a built in hint system.

Then they released RealMYST, which was built on Myst: Masterpiece Edition, but was built in real-time, free roaming 3D, with, once again "enhanced" graphics and audio. RealMYST introduced Rime and a few other easter eggs.

Now, they have released RealMYST: Masterpiece Edition, following the tradition of enhancing the Graphics and Audio, fixing bugs, and updating the games for modern PCs. This version also includes Rime, but I have not had the chance to really explore and find any new content.

I hope this clears up any confusion. :)
It's getting there..thanks... So if I never played Myst (I had the original but didn't get far before I moved on...I was much younger then).....would this be the version to get?.... does it encompass the original msyt game (adding more, etc..). again, thanks for clearing this up...

hucklebarry: which is still a touch questionable for a 4th release.
Except that you have to consider that this is not just a standard "recompile for Windows 8" release. This version took years to redevelop, and it was done in an all new engine, and it cost a ton. They truly deserve to release it for even more than they originally charged (as in, it is worth way more than $15).

And for anyone interested, in the video I posted above, Robyn talks about the Starry Expanse project at about 45 Minutes in.

It really depends on your play style. If you want the classic play style, and to experience the original vision, I say go for Myst: ME.

BUT, in this new release of RealMYST: Masterpiece Edition, there is a setting that lets you point and click like the original, and you can, at any point, hold shift, and it will allow you to see the original screens.

And so, for that reason, I say buy this version. It is more than worth it, and it really is fun, with the ability to experience nostalgia at any time.

Funny. All this release makes me want to do is play the Myst ME that I bought here a good long while ago instead of buying this. Heh.
@Zacron...thanks for the info! I think I will pick this up when I get home... Hope you get a commission! ;)
Great, I was just thinking how grossly insufficient the two versions of this game I already own were.

It goes both ways... the developers have to weigh the value of their product. The story hasn't changed. I've played it at least 3 times before. Its ONLY prettier. Their decision to build on a new engine doesn't make the game more valuable to me. They should have known during those "years" developing this version that current owners of the other 3 releases wouldn't be interested in a full priced remake. You also have to consider that this isn't the second or even third remake... its the FOURTH. Of the SAME game. I'm certainly not exclaiming that your opinion is incorrect. But I do want the devs and GOG to understand (at least for my part) why this isn't an appealing price point. I loathe the bandwagon of complainers that jump on every release and complain about the price... but this time... I actually agree that the price is not logical. (and the devs should have weighed that before making the same game again, regardless of how much it cost them).

Myst is one of those games that really shaped my childhood, and so I want to help everyone to experience it. I am in no way (yet :) ) affiliated with Cyan, just an avid collector, but if they saw this and threw me a few dollars, of course I'd be into it.

When almost all new releases are $39 or higher, and more likely closer to $59, what price point would you value this at, before any discounts for owners of previous releases?

etb: There are subtitles this time?
avatar
Zacron: There is very little speech in this game, and honestly, what little is there... is meant to be heard as it is... without subtitles. There are transcriptions of all the text in the game available online, but some of it is staticy and is meant to be barely understood. (When you play it you will understand)
Yeah, but what about us deaf people? You know, the ones who... can't hear... and would like to know what they're saying without having to refer to transcripts.

No, I get that. And unfortunately, I have never seen subtitles in MYST, at least, not this one. However, that is the least of your problems if you are deaf, as in both Myst and Riven there are sound based puzzles that cannot be completed any alternate ways but listening to the sounds and figuring out what they mean.

Honestly, though, I would still consider buying it and using a walkthrough for those parts.

TLDR version (good price for new Myst fans, I believe MANY current Myst fans will wait out the summer and winter sales).

I'm not paying more than 5.99 for it. There are two sides to the equation. You can't just assume the dev gets to set the price and everyone HAS to pay it. I use my own logic to determine whether the price is acceptable or not. They should use their logic to set a price buyers are willing to pay. Sounds like your mind is made up... but so is mine ;)

Sounds like You are looking ONLY from the devs side of things and not seeing how niche the decision was to make a remake of the remake of a game that was already remade.

I also think you are reading into my suggestion about the price. I'm not saying the developer shouldn't get compensated. I'm simply saying (and still believe) that the developer didn't consider how little they added to what their customers already owned. It doesn't matter how much it cost them... It only matters how much I gain for the money I am willing to spend. (supply and demand).

Analogies are bad as people tend to miss their points and argue semantics, but hopefully this may help you to understand the other side of the equation.

Suppose you went to a restaurant and ordered a burger. You paid $8.00 for a burger that was delivered as promised. Before you even touched it, the waiter came back and said, we now have a burger with bacon. You can have it if you like, but the cost is $10.00. MANY customers would want the option to simply pay the $2.00 for the bacon upgrade and not be out $18.00 for the burger + the burger with bacon. In this scenario, I have wasted $8.00 on a burger I now won't ever eat because I also bought the burger with bacon. (read wasted money on Myst, Myst Masterpiece, and RealMyst).

From YOUR point of view... I think $18.00 (the actual price of the game on GOG) is a good deal if you NEVER owned or played any version of Myst. I think its a horrible price point for someone like myself who has effectively bought 5 copies of the various games (both digital and retail). I never bought RealMyst retail for the same reason. I owned the game twice already and retail boxes were considered rare and started at 40+ and went up. Amazon had copies for over 100.00 when I found GOG and I bought it for $5.99 here... exactly what I thought it was worth for a game I had already played twice.

Hope that helps.

Wait, you mean it's not an upgrade but a separate game? Dammit. If I'd known this was coming I never would have bought the original realmyst.

This really reinforces my desire for a feature to permanently delete games from the shelf.

Edit: Also, why did I just get a notification that my now worthless copy of realmyst recieved an update? I see nothing new in there...

What? We added the manual to the original realMyst :)

I just realised this, thanks.

Btw, IS it possible to request a game be removed from my shelf? The original realmyst runs creepily bad on both my PC's and it'd be nice to get rid of it and replace it with the shiny new version.

Well, you can hide the game, if you so wish :)

I DO agree that to many people, especially those that have bought the older released, that is a "high" price. And as far as your analogy goes, I get that, completely. I feel that there should be a deeper discount for this release since you already own it, effectively getting that bacon.
But I also think that, to a collector, or a real fan of the series, a better analogy might be a Book. Say... The Bible.

Just kidding.

Let's try Harry Potter. Many people have read it, many people own it, and yet, if J.K. Rowling published a new copy of it, with some new content, maybe a flashy cover, a previously unreleased chapter, whatever, but simply released it, as most books are, even simple revisions, many people, including those who already own it, would go and buy it without a second thought. They wouldn't think that they should get a discount, they either buy it or they don't.

Now, normally, RealMYST is $5.99. When it was first released here, it was 9.99, i believe. When it was first released anywhere, even though MYST and MYST: ME had been out for years, it was even more than 9.99.

Following that pattern, this new release is $18. In a few months, maybe a year, it will be dropped to $15, then $10.
Every time it goes on sale, I will expect it to be as cheap as it is now, or even cheaper.

Logically, this just makes sense to me, and as an added bonus they are telling us that if we already own it, we get a discount, for now. They didn't have to do that, but they did. And I praise them for it.

(As a side note, I was weak and bought this the day it came out on Steam, but I will be buying it here as well, because it is truly worth it, and it will help Obduction.)

EDIT: BTW, I am not trying to change your opinion, and I am not trying to argue, I am just throwing my opinions out there, so please, don't take offense to any of this.
