Note: Following some discussions with Iceberg Interactive, we have been asked to remove Dark Matter from sale while the developer addresses the fact that the game's ending has some problems. The game will remain available for download for anyone who has already bought it. The developers have stated that they are working on a patch as a solution to this, and as we mentioned yesterday, anyone who wants a refund on their copy of their game is free to contact Support and we'll take care of you. Our apologies about this, and we hope that this helps address the problem. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment below.

Dark Matter, a Sci-Fi thriller that challenges you to explore the dark corridors of a defunct spacecraft where light is as scarce as the resources you need to survive.

What is Dark Matter? Imagine you're stranded in a giant defunct space exploration vessel, and you are not alone on board. There's an ominous alien parasitic presence lurking at every corner, hiding away in the air-shafts, creeping through the conduits. This is a metroidvania-type title set in deep space, where no one can hear you scream, curse at your enemies, or call for mummy when you're lost in the vast labyrinth of dark corridors. In this non-linear survival and exploration action game you'll be challenged to make it through 14 danger-filled areas designed in the spirit of the darkest gritty hard S-F. With four upgradable guns, crafting mechanics, resource management, dynamic lightning that genuinely affects gameplay, and a reactive soundtrack, this gripping game is sure to stop your heart a few times as you play.
Isn't it with Tex Murphy, that the story of the game itself came to a conclusion. Yes the movie hinted at another game (in which supposedly they believed back then would come). But the story of Overseer ended there.
It seems with Dark Matter the story of the game itself did not really came to a conclusion, there lies the difference, a big one.
While I was not interested in this game and thankfully did not buy it, I have been following the drama of its release in this thread. Frankly, I think "The first half" in the gamecard is still somewhat misleading as from everything I've read, there is no intention of continuing the game unless sales are good. There isn't even a development team anymore. I can't imagine sales will be even close to "good" after the widespread coverage. IMHO, it would be much better to say "The first part of a possible two-part game" or something similar to indicate the second part might never materialize.

I noticed this game is rated 1.5 stars. Is that the lowest rated game here?

Yeah, given all the misrepresentations the developers have already made with this release, I don't think I'd really believe a word they say about future content. Or anything else, really. Probably better to assume that what we see is all we'll ever get.

And, yeah, you're right -- last I checked, MOO3 was the worst rated game in GOGdom at 2 stars, so, I guess we have a new champion?

TheEnigmaticT: ...
*slow clap*
I've heard quite a bit of negativity of this game. Missing features that were claimed on the spec sheet sounds very, very wrong indeed. :(
Man even bad press is good press. Honestly the more bad I hear about this game the more curious I am to play it. You know, just to see.

There is no way I am paying this price for that. Curiousity has a price, but it is a hell of a lot cheaper than this.

Slightly related (sort of) was Hydrophobia. The launch of that game was not handled well. In fact, it was appauling. Despite that, I played the demo and I liked what I saw. I bought the game, played the game, enjoyed the game. This was all before "pure". Maybe this will be the same? Hey you never know, it could happen. Most probably will not, but it could.

howd they botch the launch?

(not disagreeing or anything, just curious what the story was)

A sort of sinister comparison in this case; Hydrophobia abruptly ended without resolving things, and Dark Energy Digital closed without being able to continue the story due to low sales.
I told you about those indie platformers dog, I told you

hunvagy: Wow, another one? And here I thought Blade of Destiny HD was the minority with someone publishing a demo or alpha marketing it as a full product.
avatar
nijuu: Big difference tho. Blade as far as i know is actually complete in terms of story & main features. Its however buggy & had missing spells, graphics etc.. and its actively being patched up from the mess it was at launch.
No it wasn't and still isn't. Prior to 1.20 you weren't able to complete the main storyline. Crafty asked for people to try and complete it when that happened. Now it's at around 1.30, and it's still not feature complete. Same crap, only difference is that the devs of Blade are at least trying to fix it. Even though I read that they want to release a Blade HD Gold (LOL) with everything in it's place sometime november. Which is funny, considering the game still isn't as promised two months ago.

Wasnt aware of that. I assume one can complete the game now?. What features are still missing? (caved in and bought Blade but havent had time to play it...)

Last I checked most features work nowadays, but there's still stuff missing, you'd have to check the bug forums to be sure, I just stop by from time to time to see when they plan on finishing it so I can buy the damned thing already.
Hmm.. you have got to be kidding me.. according to patch notes, 1.30 still contains magic spells that are only implemented now...

Apparently 1.31 is going to be a rather big patch with new textures and the like, they still might get it in together with the November "Gold" release

TheEnigmaticT: All;

It's come to our attention that the gamecard for Dark Matter was not quite specific enough about the nature of the game and, as a result, it may be that some people bought the title with some misapprehensions as to how the game's story would end. Since we don't ever want to sell a game to someone because they believe it is something that it is not, we wanted to let you know about this and let you know what we're doing to make it right.

If you bought Dark Matter before 21 October 2013 at 15:00 GMT (when we updated the description to where we feel it adequately reflects the game) and you feel that the game wasn't as promised to you, please contact Support and they'll be happy to offer you full refund to your card or, if you''d prefer, games of equal or lesser value to the sale price of Dark Matter (which is $13.49).

We're sorry if anyone who bought the game isn't happy with the way it was represented, and we hope this makes it right for you guys.

If you've got any questions, hit me up and I'll try to answer 'em for you.
TheEnigmaticT the game card still appears to be wrong...

From those who have very thoroughly explored the levels there are only two weapons - the energy caster and rocket launcher are missing (even though one is usable in the tutorial) rather than the four the card says. There are also only two ammo types rather than the four claimed (well technically there is the blueprint for cold ammo but the materials required to craft it do not exist).

JudasIscariot - did you play this to conclusion? What did you think of using a weapon (and the Teleport skill referred to) in the tutorial not being used or even available in the actual game?

If you haven't seen yet Steam have pulled it from sale at this point and many are getting refunds there even though it's rare for Steam to provide them...

And as for this episodic 'first half' nonsense... all the reports (including ex-employees in the reddit thread) agree that the developers of InterWave were laid off after the failed kickstarter (which is why those shown demos of the alpha game then have confirmed what has been released was what they saw back then) resulting in no progress in months and months...

The owners of InterWave then signed a distribution deal with IceBerg who promptly pushed out the unfinished game.

Calling this the first half with such a background is disingenuous at best - I expected better from you TET.

I am also shocked that you compared this in the same light to Tex Murphy and other games that had a cliff hanger - but had the game itself complete with more to potentially tell...

Did you view this 'ending'?... Did you watch the Let's Play videos on YouTube?... Mid-level and not just after a climax or a major fight or anything there's a nondescript door which is the only way to go which then just pops up some white on black text saying to click to go back to the menu ...

This was the kind of behaviour that was seen in the free part of shareware games such as Doom and ROTT back in the day ... in fact ROTT shareware was more complete than this!

Finally for others reading this - don't view it as a bad indie deal ... the developers are gone and it's the publisher that pushed this appalling thing out. This isn't indie - this is just your standard greedy publisher pushing out what they have to try and recoup some sunk costs.

Well, games like this one will create more negative approach among gamers towards pre-orders... But anyway, thanks GOG Team for refunds and I hope that the publisher will get nothing for pushing out unfinished game.
