Corsairs Gold gives you control over a crew of bold sea-dogs and sets you off on course for the South Seas, where fame and fortune await the brave. This complex mixture of RTS strategy, pirate adventure, and exciting action lets you roam the seas freely, looking for opportunities to serve your nation while menacing the others and getting filthy rich in the process. Control every aspect of your fleet's operations. Negotiate or fight--as a corsair you can use any means to achieve your goal. Whether you choose to be a hero celebrated by the people, a bloody villain feared by all sailors, or a respected merchant known for his business intuition, is entirely up to you. Board some of the most famous vessels in the nautical history, navigate historically accurate maps, and take part in some of the legendary events, that shaped the way we imagine the age of sails.

Breathe in the salty breeze, and let it leave the taste of a coming adventure on your dry lips in Corsairs Gold, for only $5.99 on GOG.com.
I remember playing this game a bit and I think my experiences were positive.

Can someone elaborate more how each of game aspects (RTS tactics, economy, adventure) played out? I'm on the verge of buying.

Oh yes... I remember this game well. I enjoyed it immensely... hunting down Spanish galleons filled with gold or buying few cargo ships and selling goods to different parts of Caribbean, you could also invest in towns and build up their infrastructure + direct control over boarding units and choice of cannon ammunition. I think one of better be a pirate RTS out there. I recommend to everyone who likes good old pirating.
I wish gog would include a video of gameplay on the gamecard rather than a dated pre-rendered trailer. I know I can just search YouTube for one, but if you go to the trouble of embedding a video and giving it prominent screen space then you ought to make it something worth watching.

In terms of the game, it looks intriguing. Would like to hear more opinions but I'll probably end up buying it.
The name seems familiar but I don't think I've ever played it. I'll add it to my wish list as I'm running low on ready cash.
Simple question: Are female pirates a 'thing' in this game (i.e. playable women), or just there to pretty-up the box art?

Looks like it could be fun...
Looks like a third-rate Pirates! knockoff.

What isn't, in this genre?
@GOG
Could you please explain/ elaborate on what you mean by "pirate adventure"?

Uncharted Waters 2 : New Horizons from Koei was different enough.
