Say goodbye to sunlight.

Avernum: The Complete Saga, a collection of seven epic-scaled old-school role playing games featuring an original setting and story-driven gameplay, is available on GOG.com, for only $7.99. That's 33% off for a whole week!

For a computer game, it's quite impossible to recreate what pen & paper role playing games offer--endless adventures in a land of possibilities limited only by one's imagination. That's why most computer RPGs don't even try to reach that goal. The Avernum series is different that way. It tries. And--I'll be damned--it does not fall all that short. Its inconceivable complexity and supreme storytelling is on pair, or even surpasses most of the all-time favorite cRPG classics. Over the course of seven games the saga succeeded in developing one of the most original fantastic realm and fill it with innumerable characters that live their lives, pursue their goals, and leave a mark on the ever-evolving environment. If you thought you knew the computer role playing genre by heart, but somehow you managed to miss this monumental game, you're up for a big and pleasant surprise.

Avernum: The Complete Saga tells an epic story of an underground prison colony. A place of exile for empire's banished citizens, outcasts, criminals, and bastards, that becomes a thriving kingdom of its own over the course of hundreds of years of existence. Each chapter presents a turning point in Avernum's history placing the player's party of adventurers at the center of events, making them overthrow tyrants, defend the land from vile demons, discover ominous schemes, meet strange creatures, and accumulate the power needed to change the fate itself. The series consists of two lengthy trilogies, hundreds of hours worth of gameplay each, and an additional title, The Blades of Avernum, that gives you six shorter additional scenarios and a tool to design your own adventures, prolonging your experience indefinitely. With traditional, old-school isometric presentation, tactical turn-based combat, huge gameworld, and many hundreds of quests to complete while following the captivating story, Avernum: The Complete Saga gives any hardcore RPG gamer the best value for their money!

Prepare to be drawn into one of the most immersive cRPG experiences of our times. Venture boldly into the epic, but eerie underground realm of Avernum: The Complete Saga, for only $7.99 until Tuesday, January 22, at 10:59AM GMT.

HiPhish: What's the walking speed like? I have Eschalon and apparently some idiots think that spending half an hour (not really, but it feels like half an hour) trying to cross an empty map is part of some "old school" challenge and every time someone suggest increasing the walking speed these idiots pop up and start protesting. The challenge should be in fighting monsters, building your character and exploring the world, not in trying not to fall asleep. I gave up on Eschalon, even though I liked the game when stuff was happening. Problem is that most of the time nothing was happening.
From what I remember playing Avernum 1-4, you can set the walking speed to as fast as you can click on the map :-)

It's fast and non-animated. At least in the older ones. Travelling between cities in Avernum 4 didn't take long for me even though the game world is very big.

SLP2000: Yeah, I just said we need it here on GOG, not in this pack. Nethergate and Avadon as well.

keeveek: Yes please. And any other game they are planning on making or releasing. They are amazing.
Being a fan of Spiderweb myself, I couldn't agree with you guys more :-D
Maybe one day...
But as for now I keep my credits for 500th release...
Never heard of this game before but reminds me of the Classic ultima games, wishlisted and maybe I'll give this one a spin someday

Yeah, I think it's time to scrap some funds as long as this game is on promo :D

I really wanted to play them in order 1-6, and that wasn't really possible until now. Thanks GOG!

Avernum. <3

Protip: Avernum 1-3 is best Avernum. Avernum 2 is one of my favourite games ever.

Seriously, just give it a moment to get accustomed to the controls and graphics (which reveal their 2D, spritey charm after a while). I'd say start with Avernum 2, it has some improvements.

Oh, and that remake of the first one that came out recently? You might as well treat it as a different game - different systems, different (uglier, imho) graphics, different, more linear character progression...
GOG, why did you ever stop to put name tags on screenshots when a game card includes more than one game? I really liked that feature and this is another release that makes me miss it. Please bring it back!

Anyway, I already have 4-6 and I'm not sure if I'd like to play 1-3, in fact I didn't even play 4-6 yet, but Blades of Avernum sounds intriguing; clever move to include that too. Has anyone played it? How are the default scenarios and how long are they? Are there a lot of good quality fanmade adventures available for download? How easy is the editor to work with?

I have Avadon which is from the same dev. I was starting to get into it, but the level design was too confusing. I am wondering if all of their games have iffy map layouts?

Fred_DM: wasn't there some talk about Spiderweb remaking all the old Avernum games, like they did with Escape from the Pit?
I remember Jeff Vogel talking about remaking the first three due to their not working too well on modern PCs. Escape from the Pit came out in late 2011, so I'm not sure if he's decided to follow up with this intention, or whether he did decide to fix up the old games after all. There's no telling how long development of each instalment would last, although there was generally anything between a year and two years between instalments in the past.
"accept your fate and die in this cold, dank underworld"

wow, can you really do that in the game? o.O
I will definitely pick it up but later. Perhaps much later. My backlog is huge and I didn't even finish Geneforge saga (actually I finished the first part only).

So many great games...
edit: nvm, that was for blades of exile -.-

I was hoping for a good old game release. :-( Maybe next time.
By the way, GOG: what do you think about adding "extra scenarios pack" for Blades of Avernum, being a compilation of scenarios that can be download via SpiderWeb Software page?
