Part survival horror, part detective novel, part action, and part adventure--a must-have for fans of exciting thrillers and sublime story-telling.

Alan Wake, the psychological action thriller, is available now on GOG.com--and it’s on sale for 50% off for a week! That’s only $14.99 for the game and both DLCs until Tuesday, May 15th at 21.59 GMT.

From Remedy, developers of classic Death Rally and Max Payne 1 & 2, comes a third-person shooter described by its creators as combination of "the mind of a psychological thriller,” and "the body of a cinematic action game.” The player controls Alan Wake, author of popular detective fiction, who needs to find his wife in a perfect and fictional--yet nightmarish and dreadfully real--town of Bright Falls. The story is told in episodes in style similar to a mystery TV series, with each episode having its own plot but revealing new piece of the main puzzle as well. The story is filled with endless twists and cliffhangers, there are recap sequences at the beginning of a new episode, closing credits, and a lot of cinematic sequences--all of these combine to create a fantastic “film noir” atmosphere, unique to the world of PC horror games. Fans of The Twilight Zone, Twin Peaks, and Stephen King will find numerous references and inspirations while solving the mystery behind supernatural horrors that infest Bright Falls.

Mr. Wake will walk the streets, find clues, and talk to people during the day; he will fight various enemies during the night. Light is the main weapon in Alan’s fight against the town’s inhabitants who have been possessed by a darkness that transforms them into axe wielding murderers. Enemies are initially impervious to attack, and can only be harmed when exposed to light, coming from your flashlight, flare guns, flares, and environmental sources. Even if you’re not afraid of the dark, the game will keep you on your toes, and once the darkness creeps in you will not want to leave your safely lit havens.

Gripping suspense, intense action, great thriller storytelling, flawless design--yes, Alan Wake is a perfect game. Time magazine named it the best video game of the year, IGN awarded Alan Wake “Best Horror Game”, it has also received numerous nominations for “Best Narrative”, “Best Writing/Story”, and “Best Character” (for Alan Wake).

Grab Alan Wake for the next seven days for only $14.99--and get with the manual, wallpaper, and a number of videos and extra goodies (stay tuned for more extras soon) all for one great price! Expect other great games from Remedy coming in the very near future!

timppu: There was a voting about newer games on GOG, and I voted for them. :)
You weren't alone, in fact, I recall a GOG staff member explicitly stating the majority of poll respondents voted in favour of "new/newer" releases.

timppu: Anyway, even though I expect this release to be a special case (ie. I am not really expecting a flood of 2010-2012 non-indie games here in the near future), it is quite an important precedent. Or has this game been released DRM-free anywhere else before, even retail?
All copies of Alan Wake used Steam DRM, including the retail ones.

Kunovski: definitely Alan... it's shorter and it hasn't got a sequel which will make you start playing it right after finishing the first :o)

FraterPerdurabo: Thank you, thank you.

I've got the afternoon off, so will stick to Alan Wake. The 8GB will take a while though :(
Why not just play another game in the meantime or just start the download before you go to sleep and have it ready by morning?
Couldn't believe my eyes at first! One of the best recent games, DRM-free with bonus goodies and for a more than fair price! And with all the languages, too. GOG, you're amazing!

But what about future episodes? For those who don't know, Alan Wake's plot doesn't get fully resolved with the end of the game, and is gonna be continued in additional episodes.
As far as I know, GOG doesn't sell DLCs [yet], so... in what form will they be available for us (if at all)?

SirEnity: "Expect other great games from Remedy coming in the very near future!"

Remedy only made 5 games, Death Rally, the Max Paynes, and the Alan Wakes.

Saying "games" in multiple means they gotta be talking about the Max Paynes.
Which is owned by Rockstar
Which is owned by Take Two
Which owns 2K Games
Which owns Fireaxis and Irrational
Which created and owns Civilization and Bioshock.

I wonder what this means.
Remedy got back publishing rights to Max Payne on the PC!
Wow, wow, wow...

I can't believe. You ripped this game from the hands of Steamworks and Microsoft! And that new game? Incredible GOG!

When my paycheck arrives $15 dolar will be reserved for you! =)

Keep the new games coming!!!

It will be the day when we see Skyrim on GOG ;)

Alan Wake American Nightmare will be released as an expansion so no problem with that :)
This was only released at the start of the year, Yet i can get it stupidly cheap from my favorite DD site ever?

PirateNeilsouth: Still though... Alan Wake?, now we are putting up games that are less than a year old I know gog is not doing just classics anymore but this is NOT the gog that most of us expected. Gog has lost it's charm and the cost should never be over £15 !
So you knew gog wouldn't be doing just the classics, yet you're surprised by a newer release like Alan Wake because........?
And how do you know what most of the gogers expected anyway? Did you read the survey results? With all the drm bashing that goes on around here, I'm sure that this type of release has made a large portion of gog users very happy

I'd really like to know what the trolls think about this, you know, those ones who are so dissappointed in GOG selling old and new games.
Now this is an excellent release, despite the price tag :)

spinefarm: It means Death Rally on my shelf ... :D
Well Death Rally is already freeware in the windows version. So I won't even expect to have to pay anything for that...
Btw: Great to see a game that is not The Witcher 1 or 2 and that does provide multiple languages (although I personally almost always prefer the English version anyway - with a few exceptions such as The Witcher).
