keeveek: And about Pacific once again. It's like band of brothers but WITHOUT any kind of brotherhood of arms there. So it was simply painful to watch.
I began to like it better the second time I watched it.

The series is mainly based on the books written by Eugene Sledge and Robert Leckie, if I remember correctly. I expect it to reflect the experiences put down by these guys. Which by the way reminds me that I should look to buy these books.

keeveek: I am finally going to watch Platoon, Das Boot (5 hour version) and Die Brucke 1959, but do you know anything else?

I've seen Apocalypse Now, Thin Red Line, Heartbreak Ridge, All Quiet on the Western Front and a few more.

But please, I want some real raw experience, not some "epic" "filled with pathos" bullcraps like Saving Private Ryan.

I'd apprecieate any recommendations :-)
Here are World war 2 movies that take place in the eastern front

If you're in the UK, and haven't seen it, I recommend switching over to Film4 NOW for Das Boot!

Or at least start your VCR/DVRs recording it :P

It's on until around 0320 >.<
How could I have forgotten Death Watch. I rented it on VHS back in the day based on it's cover alone, and I was not disappointed.

zomgieee: Thin Red Line was awful. Has anybody mentioned Hamburger Hill yet ?
I agree. Thin Red Line was so boring. Hamburger Hill, good movie.
I've always liked A Bridge too Far or The Longest Day. Both are great!

Not sure if they are what you are looking for, but

In Harm's Way ( John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, and an all star cast )

Run Silent, Run Deep ( Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster, interesting contrast there )

and, on the lighter side,

Mr. Roberts ( James Cagney, Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon )

crazy_dave: I actually really like Saving Private Ryan - it doesn't seem filled with any more pathos than other such movies and less than most, but to each his own ...

F4LL0UT: Dude, that movie makes people wanna throw up and not because of the violence. Are Americans really unaware of this kind of stuff in their movies?
Saving Private Ryan is one of the only two or three movies I've ever walked out of a movie theater because of. Hated it, hated it, hated it. So incredibly sappy and completely unbelievable.

I do, however, now own it on DVD and it's not as bad as I first thought. Worth watching for the first few minutes, which was incredibly well filmed. Other than that though, I wouldn't recommend it.

Das Boot is amazing. Own it on DVD, seen it about 10 times.

Downfall -- German movie made about the last days of Hitler. Amazing. It's the movie this famous YouTube video uses (which, if you haven't seen it, is hilarious if you're a Vicky fan) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3UcdONzp1k

The Great Escape
- awesome Steve McQueen motorbike scene

The Eagle Has Landed - Michael Caine, classic

Guns of Navarone - David Niven and Gregory Peck -- need I say more :)

The Dam Busters
-- classic British movie based on true story about how the British first used the bouncing bomb to blow up German dams.

Von Ryan's Express - the scene over the railway bridge, freaking tragic and stuck in my memory for 30 years.

Battle of Britain -- how Britain beat the German Luftwaffe

Platoon - best American war movie ever made

The Longest Day

Three Kings -- one of the best anti-war movies ever

War movies are just about my favorite genre, so I've probably seen most. Found this list of 'the Top 100 War movies' - pretty good (although whoever put 'The Patriot' on the list should be shot), and yep, I've seen 97 of them, some many many times :)

You have no idea how many people I know who say the exact same thing. Also my brother who's a historian (and therefore despises the movie with all his heart) bought the movie solely for the beach scene - although even that one is screwed up if you're pedantic but I agree that as a purely cinematic work it's very well done (well, except for that sniper rifle that magically turns into a grenade launcher because the shooter praises the Lord first :P).

Also kudos for listing Three Kings. People treat the movie like a ridiculous and pointless action flick just because it has some (intended) silliness and over-the-top action but heck, it's a better anti-war movie than most supposed "anti-war masterpieces" I have seen. And also agree on The Patriot which is some of the dumbest stuff I have EVER seen.

I think we were separated at birth :)

I do know my war movies though. Used to watch them on a Sunday afternoon with my parents growing up. A cup of coffee, a couple of bars of chocolate, a happy family and a war movie -- warm fire against the damp British climate. Perfect :)
Blood Diamond is war-ish, very touching ending imo.

EDIT: Oh, you don't want touching. Dunno what to say.

I am sure they have been mentioned but maybe multiples suggest worthiness ;-)

Kelly's Heros
The Big Red One
Enemy at the Gate
Maybe Escape to Athena? So bad it is so good :-)

gameon: Full Metal Jacket
I popped in to make sure this was suggested. Good job.

You want raw? This will give it to you. Watch it soon.
I have trouble sleeping (most likely because I'm too excited for the upcoming sale) so I might as well list some of my favorite war films.

Straight Up War:

Apocalypse Now
Dr. Strangelove
Full Metal Jacket
Paths of Glory
Waltz With Bashir
All Quiet on the Western Front
The Battle of Algiers
Das Boot
Patton
The Thin Red Line
Downfall

War films but more about how it affects other things such as citizens and prisoners:

Grave of the Fireflies
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
Come and See
Au revoir les enfants
The Great Dictator
The Great Escape
The Pianist
A Very Long Engagement
Rome, Open City
To Be or Not to Be
The Cranes Are Flying
