My favourite comic series is by far Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, though I was also quite fond of Preacher. Sandman probably fits more with what you'd like, though.

In terms of standalones, Watchmen and V for Vendetta are absolute classics. You should definitely read these, even if you've already seen the movies.

Something from Bonelli? Brendon is quite nice, but I'm not sure if it was ever released in English.

Also, looking at your location try finding Robotech: Wings of Gibraltar. :D
Oh, comics here is my forte (well one of them :P):

Looking for Group
Y: The Last Man
The Colour of Magic
Sandman (as mentioned previously)
Marvel Zombies (entire sub series)
Adventure Time
Ghostbusters (IDW run)
Doctor Who (Marvel & IDW run)
Green Lantern: In Blackest Night
Elric of Melniboné
Castlevania (IDW run)
Giant Monster
Trigun
The Goon
Crisis on Infinite Earths
Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi
Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi
Johnny the Homicidal Maniac
Deadpool
Deadman's Wonderland
Gantz
2000AD/Judge Dredd
Sleepwalker

Hope some of those help. :)
Transmetropolitan
Planetary
Watchmen
Sandman
V for Vendetta
From Hell
Not really your genres but Thorgal and XIII are certainly worth your time.
And if you want really cool looking sci-fi comics try Storm and Trigië.
One more day...

Sorry couldn't help but through that joke out there, seriously though One more day sucked almost as bad as Ultimatum and Rise of Arsenal..

as someone mentioned stand alone wise Watchmen and V for Vendetta are absolute classics so give those a look.

I can also recommend Sandman especially since Gaiman is going to be doing a prequel series that will cover the events leading up to Sandman #1, Top Ten(yes that is it's title) is another good one to look for, Heart of Empire, Desolation Jones, Y – The Last Man, Planetary, Doc Frankenstein, Transmetropolitan, while it's a manga it's still good Ghost in the shell, Promethea, The Incal, American Flagg, Hard Boiled, Technopriest.

Oh and Dylan Dog,also a fan of Jonah Hex it's a western it's damn good, oh and Freddy vs Jason vs Ash(from Evil Dead/Army of Darkness) that one was based on a screenplay that was written for the sequel to Freddy vs Jason called freddy vs jason vs Ash that never was made into film sadly.

Oh forgot about Hellboy

I would also recommend avoiding the following video based comics:

Street Fighter and Silent Hill well the IDW published Silent Hill comics they are all kinds of awful from the artwork to the writing.

There are two quite good Space/Science Fiction series going right now in American comics - Prophet and Saga. Prophet is a '10 crazy ideas/a minute' comic while Saga is more character-driven. There's also Casanova which is also a totally mad sci-fi book but it may be too compressed for comic-beginners.

The Brits have got their Judge Dredd which is also a fun sci-fi comic but I don't know where would be a good place to start with that.

There are also some Star Wars comics which might be right up your alley: I heard Legacy (Jedi in the future) is good, Agent of the Empire (name is self-explanatory :D) has been getting some good word of mouth too.

I don't know any good fantasy comics. But I'm not a fan of the genre, really.

mrcrispy83: Transmetropolitan
Planetary
Watchmen
Sandman
V for Vendetta
From Hell
Oh god, I can't believe I forgot Transmetropolitan; I'm looking all the damn issues on my shelf as I type this. -headdesk-
The Walking Dead.
Also most warmly recommend Neil Gaiman's Sandman-series. "I will show you fear (terror, really, now) in a handful of dust."

From my perspective, pray persevere until the fifth installment, or A Game of You - unless it is love at first sight. In this volume, the intricate inter-veawing and spinning of tales really picks up in depth, and the full potential of this series is realized.

As a totally different, and a priori, not fitting the pre-requisites, but totally worth a try is Modesty Blaise by Peter O'Donnell, a daily newspaper strip that run from 1963 to 2001. Flight of fancy and adventure in best of form, plenty of fantasy and imagination, and well paced story telling.

You shall only need one Titan Books re-print edition (The Gabriel Set-Up is the first in chronological order) to determine if Modesty is your cup of tea - but to my mind there arguably can be little dispute that she would not be the finest darjeeling, even if daily strip is a bit retro format these days. :-)

Jim Holdaway, the first artist, was simply superb. And Peter O'Donnell incredible in keeping the quality of his "plausibly fantasies" and story telling so high and consistent for decades.
Y - The Last Man, Hellboy (the whole universe) and The Walking Dead are my favorite comics.
v for vendetta

also starwars

i recommend Elf Quest by Wendy and Richard Pini. A sci-fi background with the present day heavy on fantasy. Elves who ride wolves and fight trolls. Tribal styled elves. A neat style, created by a husband/wife team. More. Fun stuff it was for me. Wish i'd bought the books back then, and followed the new stories.

Just found out i still can.. by way of the authors putting all 6500+ pages online ! And some recent continuation of the story. Much i had missed. Am looking forward to reliving the experience, then following all the new adventures. :)

EDIT2: The more i learn about the people behind this adventure, the more my love for it grows. More than 3 decades of great comic. One of the first in the US. After a few years of being licensed to DC Comics, these stories are back in the hands of their creator who then set it all free for everyone to read. The stories they continue. More than 650 characters already. More than 6500 pages of neat story and unique art. With yet more to be told. Perhaps with a movie finally being realized in some near future. i dig it much

I would maybe a little strangely liken Modesty Blaise (fancier of which I am since forever, and from newspapers, no less) to The Withcer actually, should i have to pick a game as analogy.

Note: original, not the second, the story telling of the latter I found heavy handed and bigoted. And not too sure if any other fan might agree with me! :-p
