The game I´m searching for is one of the most accepted games of all times and was the first work of an developer still in existance today. The AddOn to this game wasn´t made by the same studio; as the original it´s setting place in rather cold areas.

Im really just guessing as ive never played the game, but it seems to fit several of your hints.
