I've been thinking about getting TES: Oblivion, but I didn't like skyrim that much. I thought that the characters and story were bad and I got bored of it. Is Oblivion better in that regard? Also I heard that you could get screwed if you did you build wrong (meaning enemies would destroy you unless you lowered the difficulty, but what fun is that?). And do you guys know of any good HD mods or modpacks (and hopefully that won't be too hard on my old computer)?
Edit: More questions you guys said that the quests are bad but I've heard good things about the guild quests and some sidequests, might just be fanboys through. Two more things, are there any good mod managers for Oblivion, and that the texture quality seems to vary (at least in the screenshots I've seen) from "Wow, that looks amazing!" to "Is that a face or a potato?".

Oblivion is considerably worse in the character & story regard. The main reason to buy Oblivion is for the mods, like this one

Oblivion sucks donkey dick compared to Skyrim. I suggest you get your hands on Morrowind if you want something better.
Oblivion was weaker than Skyrim in terms of characters, story, and questlines. If you got bored of Skyrim then it's likely you'd get bored of Oblivion just as easily. As for getting your build wrong, in unmodded Oblivion enemies are scaled very heavily to your level, in that their strength and equipment quality increases as you level up (for example you'll constantly run across bandits with the best types of armor in the game once you hit a certain level). Leveling is based on increases in skills you've selected as your major skills, so if you include several non-combat skills as major skills (such as athletics and alchemy) then you can end up leveling up fairly quickly but without improving your combat abilities very much, resulting in enemies being much stronger than you. Overall I consider the way level-scaling was implemented in Oblivion to be very poorly done, and if you get it I'd recommend getting one of the mods that fixes it (I personally prefer Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, but there are a fair number of other good options as well).

As for texture replacers, I'm partial to Qarl's Texture Pack, although it isn't particularly gentle on GPU requirements. Unfortunately it can be tough to find good texture packs that don't increase the game requirements quite a bit, so ultimately you'll just have to try a few and see if you computer can handle it.

Just had to reply to this to second that Nehrim is an excellent mod, and IMO much better than Oblivion itself (basically it plays like a cross between TES and Gothic). I'd consider it worth it to get Oblivion at its current price just to play Nehrim.

It seems that open worlds and less emphasis on narrative don't excite you that much. I'd consider spending money on something else if this is accurate. Don't try to like it just because other people do :)
