I apologize in advance for I'm pretty sure this is a really, really dumb question, and I did look at FAQ to get an answer, but I couldn't find it. Doesn't mean it wasn't there, but I couldn't find it.

What is the purpose of the soundtracks?? Are they part of the game or are they meant to listen to on Windows Media Player (or some other app) just as you would any other music. I ask because if they're supposed to be part of the game, I don't know where to put them or how to use them.

Ok, really embarrassed now, but dang it I just couldn't keep going without asking this. Been wondering for over two years now.

Extras you know.. You get the game and you can love the music and it's great to have that soundtrack. So, it's a game, then a soundtrack or more. Seems more pleasant than just a game. Even if it is how cheap.

Edit: To mention, I just now (still) are listening witcher 1 soundtrack.

On one game I own (Arx Fatalis) it lists a separate download as "In Game Sounds"

Is this still just an "extra" copy of the in game sounds or would I need to install this correctly to experience the correct sounds while playing?

I'm in the grey area in that question but those soundtracks go really well if you prepare yourself with a couple of beers. Many games, many beers.

They're extra stuff, .mp3-files packaged into .zip-files, and their purpose is to be listened to on the media player of your choice after they're extracted from the package (or you can be hardcore and open them inside the .zip but that's kind of eccentric).

So if you like the music in the game, it's an easy means to get your hands on it outside the game. Some games here are worth buying just for their soundtrack alone (such as Guilty Gear X2 #Reload).

The Arx Fatalis "In Game Sounds" are most likely just some memorable sound effects that you might want to use as ring tones or somesuch (eg. Duke Nukem 3D has Duke's one liners as audio files), though I can't check at this time because I don't have the game.

It was the first thank you this year. Well.. it was also propably last years first. =)

Not sure why they named it something different, but it's the same as a soundtrack. No need to install or anything. Just play it with a media player of some kind and listen to music while doing whatever. :)

I would bet it's because there isn't an official soundtrack (or GOG not getting the rights to disitribute it), instead this is just copies of the background music heard in-game.

Commandos 2 has an awesome track.
