So, me and my wife are looking for a solid printer after all the bullshit that EPSON put us trough. We basically have 2 very simple requirements:

- It should print with only 1 color inside, whenever others are empty or not

- It should NOT lower status of it's colors magically by not using it

So, reccomendations?

Do you need colour printing? For maximum simplicity, I would recommend a black-and-white laser printer, exactly which one is slightly less important.
I second the above. We have both and only use the inkjet for those rare occasion that colour is required.
Inkjets use a small amount of ink every now and then to prevent clogging, and so a lot of ink (and therefore money) goes to waste. Laser printers don't do this since they use a powder, so that's good. Buy a computer magazine or read one at the library; I'll be damned if there isn't a comparison of printers in one of those.

E: Seriously, read a comparing review. Some printers do some things better than others, usually at the expense of something else. Magazines do tests to find out which printer does what best.

Invest in HP, series 2 and above. Monochrome laser printer will do wonders for your budget but if you need color printing, HP has good color laser printers that don't cost much. I hapen to use HP 1515n network laser printer and it's good for all my needs.

That actually sounds pretty reasonable. Thanks.

Yea I already did that, that's why I ask for recommendations. Interesting little fact about ink printers thou, thanks for that.

And generally, thanks everyone, I'm +sing you all.
I initially got the feeling that you wanted a single color inkjet printer. I can't answer your questions directly, but I think, like most of the other posters do, that going with a dual printer setup is perfect. We use a B&W laser printer, here:

http://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-5370DW-Laser-Printer/dp/B001XM9BV8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326754585&sr=8-1

And then we have a $40 dollar Epson Stylus Photo inkjet printer. I changed the starter toner on the Brother after like 2000-3000 pages (and it does duplex and it's wireless).

After 2 years or so, I just changed the color ink on the Epson inkjet for the first or maybe second time, simply because we use it so little.

I have an Epson printer and it drives me mad when it refuses to print.. especially when it refuses to print because one of the black ink cartridges has run out. One of.

Other than that, it works really well with Linux so I can't complain about that :)
