I like this version. :-) I have already listened to it several times. And more importantly it sent me off on a Zeppelin spree. This version does of course pale in comparison to Led Zeppelin's original. It is not the most inspired performance I've heard but it was different enough in sound to be interesting for me.
I have found that cover versions that try to imitate the original almost always fails while those that radically change the song into something new many times turn up quite good, sometimes even very good. This cover does only depart a little and it would likely have been better if they had changed it more from the original.
This interpretation doesn't really add any new ways to think about the song but it managed to keep the same, naive(not really the right word), sympathetic, heartbroken feel of the original with the lovely repetitive melody line and of course the lyrics. The singing is 100 miles away from that of Robert Plant in believability, but it doesn't break it for me.
But by all means, if you are a picky eater I really can understand that this is not worth your time. :-)
Hmm. maybe i should start to listen to some Reggae since I like the melody line used in this song so much. It's something I never listen to, but I have several times found it cool when Reggae parts appear in other types of music. It was the same with funk for me, until I actually started listening to some real Funk.
Sheryl has nice voice and her singing style is just a little stupid on some parts in this song. I would probably react like you did if this song was sung with a singer using that atrocious "Contemporary R&B" \ Soul derived singing style that is used in a lot of the radio pop these days. And if I was ten years younger I would probably have raged (if someone had made such a version) in the YouTube comments section like some people did on this song.
I find this comment funny:
"Jimmy Page was aiming a gun to his head after hearing this cove r"
" Robert Plant's hair was falling off after hearing this cover "
" John Paul Jones was jamming a bass guitar on his head after hearing this cover "
" John Bonhem heard the horror even under the grave. "
" just kid i hope Jimmy, Robert and J.P.J are all allright, but I sure hope this bitch Sheryl Crow will learn a valuble lesson-you do not, fuck, with Led Zeppelin "
I can't really imagine they would take offense at a version like this. Covering a song in a very different style or arrangement is often cool. (Unless it is an abominable. Trance cover version!)
A former friend of mine told me a story from when he was serving in the military. His roommate was always playing a horrible Dance\Trance\whatever version of Led Zeppelin's Kashmir. My friend is a great fan of Led Zeppelin and he told this guy several times that the original song was made by Led Zeppelin and not this imposter, but for some reason he did not believe him. He blasted the offensive song almost daily and in the end my friend told me he wanted to kill the guy. I can understand his anger.
However, I don't think cover versions, even of the most vile ones, does denigrate the original song in any way. Actually it will cause some people that perhaps would never have listened to the original to lend it an ear and that should be a good thing.
What is much worse is when some villains or even band members themselves sells the right to use a song that means a lot to many people, to an advertising agency and that song ends up on national television promoting some product.
A couple of examples is Michael Jackson selling the Beatles away and the Pogues which I think was sold by some of the bandmembers. I haven't been injured myself, I don't even watch TV anymore but I can imagine some people being permanently damaged by this.
I even seem to remember that I heard John Lennon's Imagine used on a commercial once (I could be wrong about this though.) How fucked up is that?
If some of you like Rock music and haven't heard more than a couple of Led Zeppelin songs you should really listen to a lot more of their material. You will be rewarded well! Led Zeppelin is kind of the ultimate Rock band along with the Beatles. They were not as original or creative as them but their songs are made of some kind of Rock music essence. Earthy and dreamy at the same time.
May the gods bless late 60s \ early 70s rock and turn-based games!
