bansama: Well, the BBC have now also confirmed their death.
With all due respect to those in the US, I'll trust what the BBC state far more than what a US news service states. But then, I don't trust the news here that much either (and they are well and truly modeled on US news broadcasting styles.

As an American I am not offended - I don't trust what American news sources say 99% of the time either, they try to sensationalize everything - guaranteed that the tragedy that has happened in Russia will be 'top news' for at least 2 weeks here, even though the news channels themselves probably don't give a rats patookie.
You can't forsee shit like this happening, truly tragic.
Also, if there were the same number of UK politicians travelling in such large numbers to the same destination in seperate aircraft, travel that would ultimately end up being charged to the tax payer, as opposed to flying as one large group then the media over here would go crazy.
But yeah, really horrible. I guess we don't all have the luxury of travelling in ultra modern aircraft and even then, human error can still occur.

Its horrible.
Even with ultra-modern aircraft or anything bad stuff outside of human error or malevolence can happen. A number of years back I would watch "Seconds from Disaster." on national geographic. After about 45% shows, I would say to myself how the f does anything work; 45% was why the hell wasn't anyone paying attention, and 10% WTF.

The fact the BBC took its time confirming the fact speaks volumes. Our current over-hyped media would rather blurt out incorrect info first and then maybe correct later Its the "we have to be first mentality"
If you are a journalism major you are actually taught about putting a disaster preferably a fire in local news (if there isn't a local disaster you find another one) and this sensability has drifted up and magnified in the era of 24 hour news. I heard this second hand from a friend who has a friend that was a journalism major.
[edit - back to the orignal topic]
In any case its very sad for all involved.

Skreczi sent me a text message about this. I just woke up, picked up my mobile and, when I read the beginning - "The president's plane (...)" - I thought he sent me some kind of dark joke. Then I turned on the TV.
Since I live in Warsaw, I'll go pay my respects... Never thought of myself as a sentimental type, nor did I like our president, but I can't deny it's a bloody horrible tragedy... 96 people dead, just like that..
Now we can all grieve and wait for the political shitstorm that's bound to happen. "We shoulda replaced the planes" etc... Not to mention how many other important officials are now gone.
My condolences to the families and the Polish people.

Arteveld: As for the people on board:

[i dislike wiki, but i'm not sure if there's a better list right now]
So You may see the severity, or whatever it;s called.

Wow. That is, quite frankly, insane. I'm pretty much speechless.
What a tragedy for Poland. :-(
This is sad, so many people wow. So who is the president now? the vice president? or he was on the plane too? sorry no idea how things work over there.

The speaker of the lower parliamentary house is officially president. As far as I know from the short time that I have been living here, there is no vice president.

we have 60 days to elect new president according to the constitution.
Found out about this few hours ago. got a text when i was at work but couldn't read it till i finished.
very sad news.
Tragic. I haven't been around long enough to hear of a leader killed while they were still in office. This is shocking and very new to me.
I don't know much about the Polish Presidency, other than this man was a huge anti-Communist activist in the 80s. I don't know how he ran his nation or what the people think of him, regardless, it's terrible to lose any figure like this.
Condolences to Poland, and I wish you all the best of luck in the elections.

My condolences to the Polish people and to the families of those caught in this tragedy.
Damn. I don't think I've ever seen such a tragedy that had such a deep impact on an entire nation like this, both politically and emotionally.
From reports I'm reading in the US, and combined with wikipedia (not the most reliable) terrorism has been ruled out, due to the fact of the extreme weather conditions and the fact that the pilot just plain ignored advice.
