I'm thinking about the same as OP. In previous generations the most important Sony exclusives came usually from Japan. Has this changed with PS3?

It's funny how things turn out. I was pretty sure it was a kiss of death to Xbox360 when Blueray won the format fight over HD-DVD, but in the end that didn't seem to mean much, as it seems even Blueray is losing its importance, as movies will be delivered more and more digitally instead of physical medium.

At least in the Western world, XBox360 actually seems to be on top now, not sure though. I personally would still like to prefer PS3, if only it indeed still had some important (Japanese) exclusives. XBox (at least the earlier one) has always felt to me be too close to PC gaming, I already have a PC for PC games.

We'll see if I buy either, though... Even though I bought my earlier Sony consoles already when they were quite mature, now the discussion seems to move from current generation to next already, so it is starting to feel like investing on Nintendo Gamecube.

Nah, maybe I'll just get that gaming laptop only, I've been talking about it so long already. I'd hate to buy PS3 or XBox360 now and suddenly see that they start getting mostly just annual sports games and kid's/party games, as "serious" development is already moving to next-gen. Especially as I can't yet name the non-PC exclusives that everyone should play on either console (which may be mostly just ignorance, but on earlier consoles I had no problem pointing them out).

Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted, Gears of War, Final Fantasy. For me at least.
Atelier series (I really like these games but they're not for everybody)
Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten
God of War series
Heavy Rain
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Ratchet and Clank series
Sly Cooper series (HD collection out now, 4 coming in summer)
Uncharted series
Valkyria Chronicles
Yakuza series

And if you don't have a PS1/PS2, there are loads of great PS1 games on the Playstation Network. PS2 games have been coming in but slowly and there aren't as many yet but they're starting to build up with HD collections and digital releases.
The best movies this generation had. I still don't know why none of them got nominated for an Oscar,

What does this even mean?

I haven't kept track of FF games after FF9. I've played through all Final Fantasies from FF1-FF8 (including fan-made translations of the Japanese-only releases, but excluding FF Mystic Quest), and I think I will play FF9 at some point too. But after that, I have no idea if there is anything worth playing? At least to me in FF8, and partly already FF7, it took a direction I dislike, ie. too lengthy FMV and "movie-like experience".

Uncharted series: the little I've seen, not my cup of tea. Too much movie, too little gameplay.

Gears of War series: I dislike, and much prefer proper FPS games, hopefully more free-form ones.

Red Dead Redemption: could be ok, but frankly I haven't for some reason been bitten by the GTA-clone bug. I played GTA3 through on PC, it was pretty nice overall but I moved on. I guess I should try some of the newer games in GTA series (San Andreas and whatever), even on PC or PS2.

Kind of games I at least thought would be worth it to get earlier (Sony) consoles:

Gran Turismo

ICO

Shadow of Colossus

Lots and lots of (mostly Japanese) "survival horror" games, like Silent Hill, Clock Tower, Project Zero (Fatal Frame) series etc.

Some obscure Japanese RPGs, like Xenogears, Vagrant Story etc.

Maybe some 3D platformers lika Jak&Daxter series and such (but now that I have many on PS2, I feel like my thirst for them is quenched for now).

Also some other odd small Japanese games, but frankly now PC indie games seem to scratch the same itch. I wouldn't have been surprised if e.g. "World of Goo" was originally released as a Japanese puzzle game on PS2.

Star ocean international was a better one then the original xbox360.
Star Ocean on both systems was pretty terrible no matter the system.

Heavy Rain is something else.. than just QTE fest. I was very skeptical at first because I had tried Farenheit/Indigo Prophecy on pc years ago and I absolutely HATED it. But when I got ps3 I downloaded Heavy Rain demo and it was clear to me from the first minutes that it's a great game - it has great directing, characters, story and drive (everything that Farenheit lacked), and the QTEs don't feel QTEey at all most of the time - they are perfectly incorporated into the gameplay. I guarantee you will be on your edge many times, but unlike other QTE games Heavy Rain usually gives you second and third chances. This games is must own on ps3, and you can find used copies cheap.

Well yes, it's my opinion in that I typed it and I'm not an AI. That's a given. It's still a terrible end to the franchise considering how awesome say, Star Ocean 2 was. The game has the same fun battle system pasted over a super generic storyline.
