I don't know how others are, but I like to own physical releases of games, display them in my home, go thru the manual or generally just stare at the cover art work of a CD/DVD released game from my collection, use it as conversation opener when friends come visits, install and play it.
What could be greater than physical releases of games on gog? I know I can burn the games on a dvd, print out a cover and display it like that, but let's be serious, what would the quality of something like that be versus a proper physical release? I am sure there are plenty of people out there that are, besides avid gamers, also collectors and would buy the game in physical form. I am also thinking about the resale value here.

The idea is, are there any chances to get this? Whenever someone buys a game, have the option to pay more and get a full feature physical release sent: game on a media(DVD, perhaps usb memory stick), manual, poster and whatever else the publisher/gog feels would add value to the game.

PS: perhaps this question has been asked and answered multiple times before, but here it is again, just for good measure.

With quality printer and lightscribe you should be making good enough looking "GOG boxes" i think.

I think there is cover thread somewhere, but personally i am quite happy to ditch the physical stuff and get more free space. Definitely need more freespace..

I do understand that some people like to collect these though. But GOG has most likely only electronic distribution rightgs - so i doubt they will ever sell physical copies. Just guessing naturally.

The market for new physical releases of old games is not very large. While some people do indeed prefer to have something tangible, many others are just happy to leave the shelf clutter behind.

Combine that with the logistic horrors of organizing reliable world-wide shipping, and (more importantly) the fact that rights would probably need to be renegotiated for a ton of titles (getting a license for physical distribution is entirely different from getting a license for digital distribution, and might be tied up in more complex old contracts than the latter), and you'll arrive at a scenario where offering such a product is most likely not worth the effort.

I don't think GOG has ever explicitly excluded the possibility though, they usually state that they are a digital distribution service and don't comment further. Feel free to send suggestions to their support department. But I think the more realistic approach is to create your own physical "releases", by burning the GOG installers on discs, putting them in a box, and printing out the inlays that the community has created.

I tend to buy console games mostly nowadays, the PC games I buy are usually backups for my discs from gog, now and again I may buy a newer PC game in digi form cos its cheap and its not a particularly important game to me.

I think the last PC game I bought was Witcher 2, I also bought an enhanced physical copy just to have it all patched up, even though I cant play it on my current PC, I even bought a 360 version so I could just play it in some form.

I despise that now if you go into a shop and buy a PC game you just get a code and have to go to Steam to get your game and you have no friggin physical copy, whats the point of doing that, why not just go to Steam and screw the bricks n mortar shops that allow this to happen, they serve no purpose anymore.

I was gutted that there will be no Divinity :OS physical copy, it is a game I would treasure and keep forever in its collectors edition box, but instead all I have is a digital copy and I fucking hate that cos I am a "hoarder" at heart, I still have all my big box games, S/Shock, Nocturne, PS:T, TLJ etc. and unfortunately D:OS will never be able to nestle alongside such awesomeness.

I do remember the MMO rift CE version had a USB with the game on it free in the box which was cool.

i cared about physical games when the DRM posed no issues... now with the online requirements (see: encrypted exe or auth passthoughs) physical boxes don't matter... So i go to gog.com or other DRMfree outlets...

if i must have a game and its loaded with DRM i'll go console, but now as with "Watch Dogs" that even gets screwed up (see: uplay and others like it EA, etc) so i need to research before i even buy them...

lately ive caved to steamworks since there is a disclaimer and precedent set that if steam dies they will release a standalone client that decrypts the exe's and allows them to be played.

good enough for me, but i digress... i will buy a box if the DRM is not an "always online" or secondary auth (see: uplay, steam, securom, "bioshock" style)

I used to fell this way until I lost my original Postal box with the bullet holes in it; got lost in the move. Now looking at my other stuff only reminds me that I no longer have that one and it just depresses the shit out of me.
