sheepdragon: I've only read a few reviews by Desslock, and those have been absolute crap.
Not exactly a review, but he wrote an article about RPG's, and how they should be simplified with no numbers, and used Bioshock as an example, which pissed me off. Good riddance that guy at least.
Haven't read anything by the others though.

I never wrote anything of the kind, and never even played Bioshock, so you must have me confused with someone else. If you're going to slander me, at least ensure you're attributing your criticism to the correct person.
That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with voicing your opinion that you don't miss the columns, etc., and shouldn't feel any obligation to temper that belief by concern that someone is losing that job. All that really matters is that you enjoy the magazine and feel it offers you enough value to pay for it -- if that's not the case, people are always interested in hearing why and how you think it can be improved.
I just wrote about games as a passionate hobby, in any event -- wrote editorials and maintained my own RPG News website for almost 15 years for GameSpot, Computer Gaming World and finally PC Gamer, and am happy that hundreds of readers have written me over the years appreciating my crazy strategy guides and comprehensive reviews. I enjoyed writing my articles based upon hundreds of hours of experience with the RPGs I played - which, frankly, was far beyond what you could reasonably expect from writers who are dependent upon game writing for a living, since they have to play several games/week and write several articles in order to earn more than a few pennies. I actually think dedicated "hobbyists", are capable of offering the more considered and informed reviews, and I enjoyed contributing to game writing on that basis.
Peace.

In his defense, he did it to refute a personal attack on him. Still, keep your garlic and wooden stakes handy.

Well, welcome to GOG anyway. I hope you can find something of interest here, besides defending your honor ;-)

It's ok really, haha, just a bit over dramatic I suppose. got any good links to your articles?
I'm glad this thread was bumped, as I missed it the first time around and found it an interesting read.
Holy crap, Desslock briefly visited GOG? That guy belongs in a Gaming Press Hall of Fame!
Wow... Desslock is one of my fave dudes on PCG.
I bought the magazine mostly because of the demo CD's, which I was too lazy to download and the articles and reviews, with their bit of fun thrown in. Then they changed to DVD's which was even better because they had room for more stuff but then changed the price to 9 dollars. Understandable, but way out of my monthly budget. I'd rather just wait for a demo to download than spend 9 bucks, and getting the magazine alone for the old price doesn't entice me either, so I dropped it.
By the way, the last couple of times I bought it before the price hike they had several spelling mistakes and it made me wonder if the thing was rushed or if it simply had no proofreading.
I don't think letting go of the opinion writers was a smart move. What they'll save in salaries they'll lose in readership.
It's a shame what's happening to PC gaming. I'm visiting my sister here in the States, and got to visit several Gamestops and the stands for PC games are so small compared to console gaming. Lucky for us we have sites like GoG and Steam to keep us going.

I love the GOG. As you can see from the date of my registration, I've been here a while, even if I haven't posted before. I love everything about GOG - fantastic idea, which so far has more than lived up to expectations.
Now if only EA would allow XP/Vista friendly versions of Origin's games....

Sorry, only looked at your rep, not the date. My bad.

Personally, I'd be happier with Bullfrog, but Origin would be cool too.
