Aliasalpha: How is the character motion controlled? Was that the gamepad thing on the side?

The gun has a motion-sensing mouse mounted on it (shown more clearly in the first video), which is presumably interpreted as WASD (or possibly analog gamepad input for games that support that) so moving around with the gun results in the character mirroring that movement with reasonable accuracy. The gamepad thing is apparently used to make the trigger work.

Yes, I would assume that forwards/backwards motion is button controlled. Otherwise, you'd quickly run out of room to maneuver, if your real life steps mapped to your steps in the game.
You might be able to do it with the newer versions of track IR, you'd have to lean forward & back to advance or retreat, maybe have to have 2 track IRs to have the gun/mouse moving and then another mapped to the character movement
Or just use the novaint falcon

Hmm one could modify the gamepad stick to the back of the gun, so that it's less confusing to move about in the game.

From the video of the wireless gamegun, he mentioned that it had a "keyboard that had been taken apart" and used a Gyration motion sensing mouse.
I'm assuming the Gyration mouse is used for traditional mouselook and fire / secondary fire (probably rewired the mouse buttons to the trigger). The keyboard is probably for well... normal keyboard bound keys such as wasd movement and other things. If my assumptions are correct then I've seen a few similar but less advanced guns created (such as a Gyration mouse based NES Zapper & NES Powerglove used for NES emulation and general fps gaming on the PC).
The small lcd screen mounted to the gun is an interesting idea though, and is the first time I've seen anyone actually do this. On the wired gun, I'm assuming the video cable is strung through that large cabling coming from the grip, on the wireless I'm not entirely sure how he has it wired. Overall it's a great invention though. Good to see people doing stuff like this.

Just noticed the wireless gun also includes a micro-projector. Not something I'd ever be interested in, but definitely has me interested in seeing detailed pics & schematics of the internals of this gun.

Rosch, I'm still not quite sure how the Gyration motion sensing mouse works. Can you customise how you want the cursor on the screen to respond to the mouse's actions? Does this mean that the mouse can act as a remote control?

It's basically acts just like a normal wireless usb mouse would, as far as what it does function wise. Except instead of a ball, optical, or laser sensor the gyration mouse uses gyros or accelerometers to determine the movement of the mouse cursor. It works just like a normal mouse except you hold it in the air (instead of on a desk or other surface), when you move the mouse up in the air the cursor moves up, when you move it down in the air the cursor moves down, etc..etc..
What he did was attach the mouse (or mouse internals) into the gun, so when the gun is moved in the air the mouse cursor moves according to the gun movement. I'm guessing he also rewired the left mouse button to the gun's trigger, etc.. Which wouldn't be too hard, some wiring soldered to the contact points on the mouse's pcb board and a momentary switch placed behind the trigger.
Various people have done similar projects with both gyro/accelerometer based mice and also the Wiimote (which can interface with a PC via Bluetooth and be setup to act as a PC mouse/remote). Like this guy that made a WeeP5 (MP5 airsoft gun with an embedded Wiimote).
What about tilt motion? Can the mouse be configured to tilt in order to move the cursor up? Otherwise it'd be pretty funny if you have to move the gun vertically in order to look up and down

It'd depend upon how exactly the technology was implemented, but yes most of these should sense even small degrees of tilting movement and move the cursor accordingly.
I refuse to pay $0.99 for a chance to win this. I might as well build one myself.
