AzureKite: It'd be nice of them to actually patch out online check completely. It 's pretty much obsolete for a 2009 game.
Most games are only patched within a few months of the game's release; after that point the publisher wants to devote all effort to the sequel, so any remaining bugs and DRM will be there forever (barring a GOG release).

BioWare have a well-established tradition of leaving annoying DRM in place--Neverwinter Nights' Premium Modules still require an online check at launch (except for the selection included with the Diamond Edition) so those adventures will be lost when the activation server goes down.

Phasmid: The authorisation problem is easy to fix, it's just an xml flag that does not get set. Official EA fix instructions. It's also present in DVD versions of DAO: UE, so it isn't really anything to do with Origin per se

Well, the Germans weren't making a fuss, a German was. A german who didn't know how to use the monitoring software he was using and somehow had his medical records in the programdata folder, which is a... very, very odd place to have them. Mostly though, he confused something that scans file names, in a few specific folders with something that reads files. There's a world of difference, and literally hundreds of pieces of software- including steam, which said German was happily using- scan file names perfectly legitimately. Indeed, 'add a non steam game' and steam will merrily scan your entire hard drive, not just selected folders.

It was FUD, basically.
Yeah, was something like that. Though I still think Origin modified their German terms and conditions :D

I installed both Origin and Uplay at different points in order to redeem a free game I got with hardware purchase. Since then I've won some free games in giveaways, picked up some freebie store promotions, gifts etc. I've got about 7 or so games on each service now and paid $0 for them. Since it was free I didn't balk too much about it, however due to EA and Ubisoft's draconian DRM policies and inclusion of such in all of their games, I steadfastly refuse to ever buy any games from either company. I'll take freebies however they come, but if they want my money then the games either have to be completely DRM free, or the DRM has to be no worse than games with very light Steamworks DRM or else I'll just never pay them a cent.

Other people's mileage (or kilometerage) may vary.

eldav80: Should i install Origin or not ? pros and cons.
Pro:
- You are helping to bring down Valve's unhealthy monopoly over the PC market.

Con:
- It's still a DRM piece of shit.

I'm beginning to think that arguing with gamers over DRM is like trying to convince a raver to stay away from ecstasy.

And just like ecstasy, DRM will leave you feeling good, but with giant rotting holes in your brain.

Origin? Nah, kills ya brain cells, son! Kills ya brain cells!

I installed it to get a free game by EA but I got upset that EA requires yet another account, so I uninstalled the whole thing.
I had not thought of the point you make and it would be the only thing that would make me install it again. As skeletonbow said, only to get freebies.
I've opened a ticket, telling them i cannot access the Dragon Age Origin Ultimate - DLC's
it wont allow me to login in-game so all DLC's are unavailable...

no answer from them after 3 weeks

I remember sending gog a support ticket during the last winter sale, when a game I purchased didn't show up.

My problem was sorted out by gog support within 15 minutes, despite the site being in total upheaval due to over half the Internet trying to get their mitts on the Fallout freebies.
i'm thinking of getting among the sleep, but mass effect 3 and syndicate are on sale on origin. which should i get?

With ME3 consider there's a slew of DLC you'd want to have, which are no doubt not included.

Yikes, they really don't mention all the DLC a game has available/missing anywhere on the Origin Store pages do they?

Any change Origin will fail and EA to use Steam ?

I've actually played ME3 without purchasing a single piece of DLC. Troughout the entire game, I have never felt like anything was missing.

While that may be true, the DLC add a lot to it, not to mention, if you haven't played the Citadel DLC yet you've missed the best part of ME3.

Nonetheless, if you've never played ME3 before, I feel it's not the best investment to get DLCs without even knowing whether you're going to like the game. I feel it's a good incentive for more playtroughs tho...
