Leroux: Have you played the story-driven adventure games by WadjetEye games yet, Gemini Rue, the Blackwell series? They are comparatively short, 2-6 hours on average, I guess, and at least GR and Blackwell 1-3 ran fine on my netbook (I think Deception, Primordia and Resonance eat a bit more memory and might occasionally lag on loading on a very weak computer). In any case, if you haven't played them yet, you could download the demos from WadjetEye's homepage and see if your laptop can handle them.

If you like turn-based RPGs heavy on tactical combat and you don't mind the price tag, Knights of the Chalice is a good game to play on a low-end computer, too. Sadly it's only available from the developer, you can find a demo on its homepage. Should take about 20-30 hours to complete, which is short for an RPG (but maybe too long for the vacation?).

If you don't mind trying freeware, you could also check out , [url=http://rabotik.nl/harmony.htm]Harmony or Cave Story. They're all great games and I'd be surprised if they don't run on your laptop.

As for pre-2001 games, have you played Sanitarium? It's split in small chapters that are short enough to complete in one sitting each, so playing one every evening or so would be like reading short stories.
You know what? I think you just may have given the perfect suggestions, I'll try Gemini Rue! :D

stika: my laptop's specs:

CPU: AMD Turion 64 1.6 GHZ
RAM: 2,5 GB of DDR2
GPU: NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 6100 integrated graphics with up to 128 MB
Actually, if you're still taking suggestions, I'm fairly certain that lappy could handle most, if not all, things pre-2005, even reasonably well. A good check might be to try a Source-game demo, say Half-Life 2, see how that runs. If Steam's a no-go, I believe Telltale still have free episodes on offer on their web-site, that are even newer, but again I'm fairly optimistic. Shouldn't hurt to try, if only to get a good idea of what's available.
Betrayal at Krondor has an excellent story, and there's a couple of hours left until the sale ends. Give it a try if you haven't played it yet.

tried it already it can't run HL 2 or Serious Sam

its main problem is the Nvidia geforce 6100go card.

it's really weak

that takes more than a week fortunately though great game.
Didn't you just win some Ultima Underworlds from Lifthrasil?

They're solidly entertaining, years after their creation. Take full advantage of the ability to annotate the automap yourself!
What about some:
-Duke Nukem
-Shadow Warrior
-Catacombs
-Hocus Pocus
-Earthworm Jim 1+2

I guess my brain subconsciously skipped over the part where you said you can't run SS2, to which my natural reaction is "WUT?" Seriously, that's just not right! That chip should run HL2, if at less than pristine quality, and most definitely should run SS2, maxed. I've personally done that and more with a GMA 950, and yours is better than that! You sure you've got drivers and DX all set up properly?
Get a USB joystick and get Wing Commander I & II on GOG. If flight sims are not your thing get Ur-Quan Masters (a free upgraded version of Star Control 2) at http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

Leroux: EDIT: But judging from your previous posts you seem to like RPGs and adventures? Also, does DOSBox emulation work flawlessly on your laptop? DOSBox seems quite resource-hungry to me, too (causing the sound to lag even on my desktop PC).
Hmm, are your PCs some old retromachines? I've always been happily running pretty much all DOSBox games on my old T400 laptop, I don't recall ever thinking it is not powerful enough for running DOS(box) games.

I would think the sound lag is related to something else, you have just set some sound buffer too high in DOSBox options?

l0rdtr3k: Half-Life (I love this game,shut up)
I'm replaying Half-life (+ Opposing Force + Blueshift) right now for like the 5th time, and loving it. More than I liked e.g. playing Spec Ops: The Line.

My original idea was to replay Half-life 2 before playing Episodes 1 and 2 for the first time, but I decided to try out HL1 again for a minute. But then I decided to play it properly again.

Valve did something right with the original Half-life. I'm playing it on hardest difficulty; it still feels challenging at times, but I never feel I'm completely stuck, I always make at least some progress, and mostly it goes on quite smoothly. And quite often the "hard" parts are mainly just figuring out something and playing smart, not because you run out of bullets when enemies just keep coming.

I have these issues on both my netbook and my 6 year old desktop PC, both of which are not really made for gaming, but can handle other games alright. The desktop PC is a duo-core 2.1 GHz, 3GB memory, used to have a GeForce7300LE which died on me one summer and is now using onboard graphics (GeForce 6*** something). I think the issues don't appear in all DOSBox games, but the risk is quite high (games I remember that were affected by it include M&M3, Betrayal at Krondor, King's Quest VI, Gabriel Knight 2, Stonekeep). I think they are a little worse on the netbook than on the desktop PC and IIRC I also tried one or two of them on a friend's more powerful PC and he did have no issues at all, so I assumed it was related to how powerful the PC is.

I myself didn't change the DOSBox configurations prior to having these issues. I also started threads about it in the past and people confirmed that DOSBox emulation requires a lot more power than just running DOS games back in the day, and despite quite a few community members pointing out that GOG's DOSBox configurations aren't the most optimal, I could not fully get rid of the issues even with their help and suggestions on modifying the config file (I remember messing with cycles or something and having some minor success, but that did decrease the grade of the issues and did not fully resolve them, and it also had unwanted side-effects in some cases.)

well I did try the original SS2, not the GOG one I remember I kept getting some sort of error.

Yeah it does have the latest drivers, but for some reason I have a hard time running anything past 2001
