I have some of these games from original release already, a good example Ultima Underworld 1+2, but have not played them in years due to lack of support on the new OS. Are these patched to have proper support or do they have built in dos box or something?

Yes. The DOS games on GOG come with a preconfigured DosBox. It's really easy to use.

I have used Win7 64bit since its release candidate came out and have never had an issue with any GOG games on it. Obviously I have not bought them all, but still the point is you should be relatively safe.

What I would advise is that if the game does not have Win7 listed as officially supported check the specific forum for that game and see if anyone has posted some results of running the game on Win7. If there are no complaints in that forum, chances are the game runs fine.

I was about to start a new discussion about Win7, but this thread will do.

How about other Win98/XP games (not GOG), how good is the game compatibility in Win7? I'm asking this because now, at last, my employer is updating our PCs to Win7 era. :) Currently I am using WinXP on my work laptop, and sometimes I install some older PC Windows games from my vast library I have bought over the years, most of which are Win9x games.

WinXP has Win9x compatibility mode that has worked pretty well for me, and coupled with DosBOX, currently I can play pretty much all my PC games on the same XP laptop. Does Win7 have the same (Win9x compatibility mode)?

How about the installation, do the Win7 extra security measures cause problems for them? It still remains to be seen whether I will be able to disable UAC and/or get admin rights to my laptop.

I just don't want to have to carry two laptops with me everywhere, one for work things and one for games... :)
Every game I have tried works in Win 7. Some need a little tweaking in their .config files, but that's easy to do if you get advice here on the forum for that game, as said above by StingingVelvet. It might not even be needed. So go for it and be happy. :-)

Hi

What do you mean by ".config files", is it some Win7 specific thing? Just to be clear that I was not talking about GOG games, but original Win9x games I have. Just saying this because I think StingingVelvet was talking specifically about GOG games.

Was it also so that Win7 has problems running Win3.x programs? Then again, the only Win3.x game I might want to play is Wizardry Gold...
