Are you in search of a decent web hosting service? Well, if so stay away from AN Hosting: they have a very high rate, they are advertised on WordPress.org as one of the best services for WP-powered sites. They promise, as many shared web hosting companies "UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH! UNLIMITED DISK SPACE! UNLIMITED STUFF HERE AND THERE!".
Obviously, these are all bullshits: my site, http://kingofgng.com/eng, has been shut down many times in a few months because I had been linked by Slashdot and, in these days, by digg, reddit and stumbleupon simultaneously. So all of their dumb promises, all that unlimited stuff, has been evanished like snow in the sun.
They policy grants you 10% of the server CPU, and if you take a traffic peak they disconnect you from the net and THEN, even if you aren't liable of anything (I've not linked the above said image anywhere), they pretend you to resolve their uselessness.
I'm aware of the fact that shared web hosting isn't suitable of a decent website now, and in the next few days I will go to the MediaTemple Grid Hosting to try to leverage a little bit my site's infrastructure. But AN Hosting has been really da shit: not only their service is unable to deliver ANYTHING of the promised "unlimited!" stuff you would theoretically purchase with the share hosting plan, but in the last months the server have had a downtime practically every day and with no liability from myself.
AN Hosting is one of the worst web hosting services out there, so be aware of the fact and go elsewhere if you need an hosting service. Furthermore, even if I'm very much convinced to go with MediaTemple, I would like to know your opinion on the matter and for a good web hosting service. In this case please have in mind that my site isn't, and will never be advertising-driven (I hate it, and I will ever hate it) and it's a personal project so I can't afford to pay "too much" tens of dollars monthly for the server.

No such thing as unlimited space and bandwidth. These webhosting services simply oversell their capacity. Those who wants to purchase webhosting should know better.
My provider don't oversell and has very good "reply within 1 hour policy" for support. Me likes!

In the case of webhosting, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't. I also had problems with one company overselling their services (in Poland though). It turned out, that I have bought "everything unlimited!!!" but only if I have less than 500 files on my host. As you can imagine, any forum engine uses more files than that. My advice is: go with dedicated machines or find a decent shared webhosting (yes, there are some nice companies that actually do what they agree to do in all the adverts :)). Keep in mind that it's rather hard to voice opinion about webhosting services if you don't specify which country you're talking about :)

Well, I'd really like to know what are those honest companies :-P By choosing an host I've dugg among the highest rated companies, including those advertised on the WordPress.org site as the best choice. Again, all bullshits. Dedicated webhosting, furthermore, isn't an option for its cost....

Oh well, the question is worldwide suitable: I'm from Italy but I've choosen an American host because here in Italy the laws and the lawmakers are really, really, really assholes....

Well, there are very good shared services. In Italy I use this , they have a great support service and it isn't expensive. I like it.

Uhm, it sounds interesting. Here the problem is that I can't possibly trust the dumb Italy laws on blogging as "stampa clandestina", you know....

You're correct. There isn't a very good situation here in Italy, but i didn't know that it's so bad, and it is going worse every day...

If you are running a website which you update and use often then it really is worth going that little extra and spending a little cash on a webhost who can guarantee the service you are looking for.
For me, the price of a couple of pints of lager would give me a months worth of service rather then 30 minutes of alcohol which is a memory the following morning.
It's a matter of perspective.

Yep, I'm Italian, but not so proud to be so lately....

Having run a hosting company since 1998 (no shameless plugs here, were here for GOGames!), I can tell you that the majority of shared hosting companies oversell as a practice - only 10% of your customers will even remotely use what you sell them, therefore you can offer everyone the world, knowing full well no one will take you up on the offer. If they do, you have CPU usage and whole assortment of wonderful ways of cutting them off.
A lot of these companies buy a server, fill it up, then sell it to larger hosting companies for a profit - then start all over again.
If you actually want space and bandwidth, be prepared to pay for it. A good hosting company needs your money not only to make a profit, but to improve hardware, pay competent staff and keep the pipes flowing.
Not all of us are like this - research the companies that you are going to do business with.
