Well, I don't think that Obama asked to be on the list... So frankly, that's more a big blow to his "would-be" future peace moves than an award. Poor Obama...

klaymen: Perhaps the other nominees were Saddam Hussein (in memoriam), bin Laden, a random dude found on the street and Gordon Freeman, so Obama was obviously the best choice.

Random dude found on street has a monthly direct debit to Amnesty International to the tune of £5. I vote Random Dude Found on Street for Nobel Peace Prize!!

good for him, but such awards are meaningless since they dont negate other terrible people.
He got the prize for "good intentions". It seems nowadays that it's enough to get the Nobel. Even though he didn't ask for anything, he could have refused to be on the list. That would have been wiser and better for his image.

Catshade: This proves that Obama is really the prophesied Anti-Christ!!!!
if he was the anti-christ, by definition you wouldn't know, you'd love him. so relax, and enjoy your hatred. :D
I confess, I am also at a loss as to why my President would receive this award. Everyone expects miracles from him, that's true enough, but he hasn't actually begun walking on water YET. Given time, I have every reason to believe that he'll back up his hype with deeds, or try to, but he hasn't been given any time. He's been in office for less than one year.
I can sort of see Jagland's point about giving the prize a means of enhancing a person's political presence, but I don't know if that will really help Obama in this situation...
that's gonna put a lot of pressure on the guy!
I guess it's a sign of the relief the world felt when he was elected, but i sense recently people have started getting impatient, as he hasn't actually done much.

Hasn't done "much"? You're giving the guy too much credit... he hasn't done anything worth noting as of yet. :)
It's a political move by the norwegians who gave him the award, but no one's believing it'll have the desired outcome .

Actually it's going to probably have the opposite of their desired effect (this will probably hurt Obama more than help his plans), as well as discrediting and drastically lowering confidence in the committee. With one action they've turned the NPP into a joke of an award that no one is going to take seriously any more.
Political tactic by the norwegians...in the CBC.ca story, they even admit that they expect Obama "To live up to it"...
Very clearly, this was a well-thought out tactic to force Obama's hand.
Better him than Silvio Berlusconi anyway. And no, I'm not joking at all....

Absolutely. Especially while he currently is negotiating the number of troops to send overseas. The Nobel committee lacked of discernment.
Edit : and "lol" for Berlusconi.

Now I understand how that idiot Krugman could get Nobel Prize.
Nobel Prize is being given by idiots.
So I guess now the Nobel Peace Prize means absolutely nothing. Sad - I feel sorry for the memories of those people who actually deserved this award... Obama has done absolutely nothing to merit this achievment... its like calling someone a philanthropist because they give a penny to a beggar.
