Definitely, I so didn't see that coming I had a true "WTF??" moment then! I was expecting to fight a guy throwing explosive footballs or something, and the fact that the cheerleaders all counted in the ranking as well... then they stole my baby! :(

When anyone mentions "hardcore gamers" and happens to be a console gamer, run as fast as you can.

Usually a hardcore gamer would be someone who can master any game. But during this console generation it somehow changed into "guy who does not play Nintendo". So if you buy a PlayStation and God of War, then you are a hardcore gamer (because it has blod, and violence and breast and it's rated M). If you love blood and violence, you are a hardcore gamer. But no matter what, you MUST NOT play Nintendo games!!!111!!1
The opposite of the "hardcore gamer" would be the "casual gamer", a pathetic dirty little person, who could never grasp the high artform of true and sophisticated hardcore games, such as Heavy Rain, wichich is a masterpiece that will redefine gaming and finally establish it as an artform on its own (yes, I am being sarcastic).

So it's basically some twisted elitist logic for people who play dumbed down PC games and pay for P2P online connection, first-day DLC and loooove DRM (we musst support the developers!!!).



Anyway, I kind of enjoyed the first NMH. It's a bad game, but enjoyable (having paid only 10€ factors in as well). Just get a 100% savegame from the internet so you don't have to grind for money. I just loved slashing through hordes of enemies. And that's basically everything there is to say about it. The humour is fun, but the main aspect is just fighting your way through countless enemies. If you don't enjoy that kind of game, then there is not much else for you.

The second game on the other hand is actually a good game. They dropped most of the useless stuff out (such as the overworld) and there is more content.
It's basically still the same concept, fight countless minions, defeat the boss. The 8bit minigames are actually good and fun, I enjoyed playing them inbetween missions. It's a typical arcade-style console game where you just grab your sword and fight until the boss dies. As for the cutscenes, you can skip them with the + button. I liked the crazy over the top stuff and various parodies (like the sneaking part - I was like "no, not again such a game" and then the game is like "nah, just kidding, tak your sword"). It's essentially a parody of modern "hardcore" gaming.

The only thing I regret is picking the easiest dfficulty. it was way too easy. I'll only play on bitter from now on.

I always figured that because the Wii had all those classic Nintendo franchises and a giant back catalog of GameCube and Virtual Console games that made it the hardcore console. I have a PS3 and a Wii. I have 60 or so games for Wii and maybe 25 or so for PS3. As soon as you include GC, VC and WiiWare I have almost 200 titles on Wii (still only 25 on PS3), it simply has the stuff I want to play.

If you understand and play Dwarf Fortress, you are a hardcore gamer.
If you spend more than ____ hours a week playing a games, your a hardcore gamer.

i beat the gameboy advance version of super mario bros 3 from start to finish without using the flute. i have beaten legend of zelda a link to the past on the snes 10 times or so. so am i a hardcore gamer?

I don't think "hardcore" gamer means anything, really... It's just an adjective used to say that a person is really into gaming, I suppose.

On the other hand, I've heard the term "Core" Gamer to be a term that differentiates a type of gamer from "Casual" Gamer.

A Core Gamer is a demographic type that is enthusiastic about gaming and is likely to be interested in not just playing games, but delving into the mechanics of games, modding, design... participates in social gaming communities, etc.

The industry might see a Core Gamer as one who prefers the deeper and more complex gameplay of PC and/or console titles such as Call Of Duty, WoW, Modern Warfare, Red Dead Redeption, Starcraft, Civilization 5, etc... you know, AAA titles. I tend to think a Core Gamer is as likely to play Bejeweled or Zuma or even Farmville as well, but that gaming for them is a serious hobby. In fact, many probably like tabletop gaming as well.

I also think that just about every single person on this site is a Core Gamer. This community's interest in Baldur's Gate, XIII, Fallout 1 and 2 and the like is as strong as their (our) interest in Dragon Age 2 or Duke Nukem Forever.

The Casual Gamer might only enjoy some occasional gaming and might focus on titles with a social focus, like Rock Band or Wii Sports or several of the Facebook sort of games.

I think it is really a matter of interest. A Core Gamer will devour any game they think is fun and challenging, and probably spends most of their free time gaming whereas the casual gamer is far less obsessive, isn't hellbent on finishing every title, and doesn't salivate about new titles on release day.

I hear the terms used as derision, as if to say casual gamers (and thus casual games) are inferior to Core Gamers (and thus Core Games), but I don't that's either fair or right.

I have traditionally thought of myself as a Core Gamer, though my behavior of late is more casual because I'm focused on school right now. I tend to ramp up in the summers and get really obsessive.

Anyway... that's my 2 cents on this.

In any given "Gamespot Vote for your favourite whatever" event, you have an infinite number of little bastards running around saying things like "OMG! j00 c4n7 p055181y 4 1337 GAMER if you voted for X character" (I petered off the leet speak at the end there because it required too much thought to write like a little douche). The point being that the little assholes who played pirated ROMS of Final Fantasy SNES games when they were seven have an incurable fanboyness for the stuff, and anyone who doesn't share their love for FF, at the exclusion of all other games, is "uber-lame" or some such shit. It's like the last round of "Games' Greatest Villains", anyone under the age of three protested the inclusion of such villains as The Joker and Darth Vader, simply because the medium of media they made their first appearances in weren't, in fact, video games, even though they were great villains and appeared in a great number of games since the invention of the Atari 2600 (The Joker I'm not sure about, the earliest game I remember him in is the Amiga version of Batman: The Movie: The Video Game [Ocean], but I know there's been a ton of Star Wars games since the late 70's). In fact, some of the villains that made their first appearances not in a video game, have since made more appearances in video games than in the medium they first appeared in. And vice versa!

And so I reiterate that the best definition of "Hardcore Gamer" that doesn't mince around is "Someone who spends every waking moment in front of a screen with controller in hand", and a "Casual Gamer" is "Someone who enjoys a video game during a ten minute break or a party game on Saturday nights with friends".

I think what I like about the word Core, vs. Hardcore... is that it helps separate those who are passionate about gaming from those who are douchebags about gaming :-)

When I see "Core" capitalised, I think of Chuck Rock and classic Tomb Raider.

When I see it capitalized, I'm reminded that I have broken a fairly basic rule of grammar, and for that I deserve scorn and derision :-(

I wasn't deriding you. I was just remarking that I have great nostalgia for Core. You know they made a Platformer/Side-Scrolling Shooter based off the cartoon segues in Monty Python's Flying Circus?
