F4LL0UT: Well, yeah, I took another look at the article at Rock Paper Shotgun, it just says "Night Dive secured the rights", whatever that exactly means. I thought the same article stated that Stephen Kick also had to borrow money from another party to pay the insurance dudes but apparently I confused the stories here. Well, Night Dive is listed as the publisher on GOG and Steam so they certainly are profiting from every unit sold and must have done something more than just convincing Star/Meadowbrook to make a deal with GOG and Steam (aside from polishing the game).
I think Night Dive acts, for all intents and purposes, as publisher and takes care of the middle-man work between the rights-holders and GOG, Steam, and other stores. In that way, it's beneficial to the rights-holders because they can bring the game to a wider audience than GOG alone, and this will end up helping GOG secure games it couldn't previously on their own. I mean, it's been known on the GOG forums for years that Harlan Ellison's company still had the rights to IHNMAIMS and that they were still selling boxed copies, but maybe GOG on their own couldn't make an attractive enough offer but Night Dive could by offering to bring the game to multiple digital retailers.
