Arianus: You can get this game cheaper but here

UFO Extraterrestrials Gold Edition

Probably the closes thing we'll ever get to X-Com, Had they added Psi Abilities it might as well have been X-Com in my book.
Look out for Xenonauts too. Apart from UFOET, it may well be the next closest thing to X-Com.

Anyway, just saying. If you guys want to make a statement, do it with your wallets. Fun game or terrible game, smart marketing or dumbass marketing, this option will always hold.

I'm in a current game now, five months in, just finished psi-labs in two bases. Playing on experienced. Trying to not reload more than once per battlescape. Fingers crossed that my first round of soldiers won't be all psi-weenies. I already had to sack a few who were being very problematic on sectoid missions. But I like to keep the real weeines around, totally unarmed, just as bait. Anyone else?

But anyway, I fail to see the utility in using the name XCOM unless the devs are wanting to alienate old fans.
It reminds me of the first 2 Brother in Arm.
I sure would prefer a proper X-COM game but if this game retains even 1% of its origin it will still be leagues ahead of the Halos and the Killzones of the world. Under any other name I'd still be willing to give it a chance. All likelihood though is that the "strategy" is total wank and you can break the game just by using electro bolt and shotgun on everything.

StingingVelvet: As a sequel to XCOM I can see hating it.

On its own merits though I think it looks nice.
QFT.
All the people who think "It's terrible at being XCOM" are simply putting things in a wrong perspective. A horse will obviously make a shitty dog; that's because IT'S A HORSE.
Using a more tangible example - that's like being disappointed with your new girlfriend, tacitly comparing her to your ex. Guess what - no one will be more your_exish than you ex.

Also - if you're looking for a remake, check this out.

I love it. And remember guys, the first X-Com was my first real game. I love X-Com. I watch this, and read what they've said about it, and it seems like a very nice reimagining of the series. More X-Com-ish than X-Com Alliance was going to be (which people were excited about), and I love the setting too. Am I alittle disappointed it's not a TBS? Yeah, a little. But looking at this, I am liking what we seem to be getting. So seriously, just wait a bit, play it when it comes out, or sooner if there's a demo (not likely, unfortunately), and then if you don't like it, scream all you want. I'll totally let you.

My one hope, however, is that they have Chryssalids in it. Especially if they're as terrifying as they wereback in the first one.

EDIT: And as for a good TBS, I would suggest Ufo: Alien Invasion.

Delixe: I HATE THIS
LOL what the hell? Looks more like a TRON Attacks! game or something
Trailer looks very interesting.

Would love to see the other games on GOG someday.
It's certainly not X-COM. I don't get why they'd tarnish what could have been a good game in its own right by associating it with a series it has nothing to do with. The game itself doesn't look that bad though. It's just the name.
As has pretty much been said already, your options are:

A) this game should not be made. the X-COM license is forever dead. No new classic style X-COM games ever.

B) this game makes people interested in the franchise again, and a new classic style X-COM game is a real possibility.

There is really no need to get all angry over this.
It's not as if this is the first time X-COM has been done differently to the original turn-based tactical gameplay - remember Interceptor and Enforcer?
Sure, those might not have been as good as the earlier games, but they weren't exactly terrible, either.

As long as they don't simplify 'XCOM' too much, it could actually be fairly good.
My head hurts. This could be related to the fact that I hit my head repeatedly against the wall, but who knows.
