orcishgamer: Indie titles: You have to be online to play, these are not ERSB rated, the community sets ratings for these. The demos for these are the full game and they simply turn off after 10 minutes or so of play until you buy them.

MobiusArcher: The vast majority of those indy titles are horrendously awful, but its worth trudging through the crap to find the good ones. There are some excellent games on there for just 1 dollar.
Yeah but the good ones are really good. You don't have to trudge through them yourself, there's a lot of lists for games based on tastes.

orcishgamer: ...
Very long and very informative post! Thank you.
I didn't thought there is so much to say about an XBOX but it seems to be a very complex topic... :)
Actually I'll have to re-read your post a few times in order not to miss anything...

spindown: Edit: I just realized that Xbox Live is not officially available in Romania, so you cannot even set your account to your true location. That's probably why you chose the US instead. I'm not sure how access to Xbox live works, but it sounds like you can simply set it to a fake address to get access even from countries that are not officially supported.
I'm a little bit disappointing that XBOX Live is not officially supported in Romania. It's odd because they sell XBOXes in the country. I saw XBOX demo stands in malls here so I did not even imagined they are not fully supported... :(
It makes me feel like I'm living in Burkina Faso or something...

iuliand: Snip
I received a code for free month of Xbox Live Gold Subscription on the 1st, if you want it send me a PM and you can have it - as i do not have an Xbox.
Today I went to a local game store in order to browse the xbox games. I have noticed something worrying, all the games are labeled as being for "PAL" consoles but the game that came bundled with my console is labeled as being for "NTSC". I don't get it, what is the importance of this while I'm connected trough HDMI to the TV set and use 1080p? And why would be this relevant for a game? It is a game after all, not a movie!?

So, the question is, are the xbox consoles built as PAL and NTSC or they are all the same? Will my console run "PAL" games sold in my area?

Unfortunately I don't have atm. any source to borrow a "PAL" game and see if it works.

edit: After some more googleing I found this:
"Just like current generation consoles, a console designed for North America (NTSC) won’t work on Europe (PAL) for the simple reason that games are region locked. So if you get an US Xbox 360, you’ll have to purchase NTSC games because those titles sold in Europe won’t work on your North American Xbox 360."

Damn! If it's true than MS screwed this up sending me a console for the wrong region.

Heya, I didn't look at your country. A lot of the Live Gold content that I was gushing about is not available outside the US (e.g. Netflix and ESPN3), fyi.

I think I read something about how PAL/NTSC worked a little different for the XBox 360, you might call support and see.

Region locking on the Xbox 360 is game specific. I found this list here that shows it all, and it seems to be pretty current. http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-00-3-xbox360_compatibility_guide-49-en.html I cant vouch for this site or anything though. I just found it in a Google search. This would probably help you more if you figured out what region your xbox is from, but Im not sure how to go about doing that.

Legit: PlayAsia's probably the biggest importer on the web. That said, there's no mention of PAL games in that list.

Speaking of PAL vs. NTSC, I have a question too. I'm going to move from Europe to the United States soon, and I currently own a PAL Xbox 360. I've been wondering what to do with the console and my games. Obviously, I'm not to keen on rebuying all my games in the States, so I would like to take the games with me. Is it possible to buy a PAL Xbox in the US, or would I have to ship my console overseas? What about the XBLA games and DLC I bought, are they region locked, too? I'd be grateful for any advice...

The problem is that there's no guarantee that an NTSC 360 will work with all your PAL games. It should be possible to import a PAL, but it'll probably be cheaper to simply ship your console overseas. But again, it probably won't work with NTSC games. It's a case you'll have to buy a second 360 or you'll have to rebuy your games.

If you do choose the latter option, you should be OK with the licence transfer website for your DLC and XBLA stuff.
I resurrect this topic because I don't think it is appropriate to make a new topic for every new beginner's question that comes into my mind...

So here is a little update onto my xbox adventure. I managed to get an exchange for the NTSC console with a PAL one so now I have access to a whole new world of second-hand disks available on the market... :D

Now I'm planning to get a second wireless controller. And here is the problem. I'm puzzled by all the various models and prices available on the market. All look the same but models are like:
"NSF-00002", "JR9-00010", "JR9-00002" and "B4F-00017"... these are just some examples. I see no obvious differences but the prices vary a great deal. And to make matters worse, on my controller I can't find a code similar to those. Does anyone know how to buy a proper controller?

I'm also thinking to acquire a Chatpad for the controller. Has anyone used one? If so, maybe have some impressions to share.

they are pretty much all the same thing just variations (except for the one with a variable D-Pad) just look for an official wireless controller they will all work fine :) if you use the d-pad a lot though I do recommend the variable one it's much better than the original.

oh and I just plug in my spare USB keyboard ;)

Can the transforming D-pad be found on controllers currently available on the market? I looked at local retailers and I can't seem to find a controller with that feature.
I found it on some special edition controllers available on ebay, but I'm not willing to pay extra for a special edition. Is the transforming D-pad available on regular models?

Sorry about the delay.. No I'm afraid it was an SE released recently to test the market you can still find them on some other (non-ebay) sites but they are a couple of quid/dollars more for some reason
I just bought a new one and found some of the newer controllers seemed lighter to me. I thought I wouldn't like it, but I think I do. I just hope they last forever like my others.
