Actually, GOG has its own U2k4 Server, and there are still many players online. A good shooter would be Far Cry, Duke Nukem 3D, and maybe Postal 2.
Enjoy out semi-classy community.
You shouldn't have much of a problem finding a game online. It's old but it was extremely popular.
Painkiller is a good shooter. It's about as close as you'll get to a SHUMP in FPS form. Don't expect much of a plot, but there's plenty of killing to be done. It's on sale at the moment too and even includes the expansion.
Welcome aboard mate
For a shooter I'd probably go with far cry myself. It's pretty, the shooting feels nice and there's enough variety between shooting and exploration to keep things interesting.
Personally I thought it fell apart about 2/3 of the way through when the shooting became the dominant focus but since that sounds like what you're after that might be a positive for you where it was a negative for me
If you like fast paced shooters or have ever played serious sam and enjoyed that then I would definatly recommend PAINKILLER!

I've never heard the 2/3 point of farcry described in that way before. For me personally the 2/3 mark was the ohh crap I keep getting killed part, screw this game, time to play something better.

For me it was more like "What the FUCK?! Where did that monkey thing come from!?"

No, we don't. It's gone.

Dammit....*Sobs*. Okay, moving on.=)
Even Ut99 has a large group of player still. Possibly more than 2k4, and certainly more than ut3.
Being a big shooter fan myself, Duke Nukem 3d and Painkiller are awesome shooters, and they're both the deathmatch variety. Far Cry is a pretty good tactical shooter, but like others have said after about 2/3 of the way through it gets weird. I turned on god mode to get to the last mission, and there were loads of "super bad guys" all carrying rocket launchers.
Postal 2 is a fun game, but I wouldn't consider it a shooting game. The shooting mechanics aren't that good, what makes the game good is the humor and storyline.

Thats what I was getting at just without the spoilers. ;)

Painkiller definitely. It's very good for just killing stuff and stuff and moar stuff.
Also check out Die by the Sword. I recommend it heartily to every GOGer
Get Painkiller...oh yes, the VERY definition of a Good Old Game...
Die By The Sword (with Xtended mod) is not all that bad either :D.
