Today's second release is, beyond doubt, the most oldschool one in GOG.com's history. Read below to find out why.

The Anthology includes Zork I, Zork II, Zork III, Beyond Zork, Zork Zero, and Planetfall. This means six titles in total, all hailing from the 1980s, weighing in at a whopping nine megabytes. Yep, that means just around one floppy disk per game.
That means plain text and gameplay based on text input, but beneath the rough exterior lies a beauty that's hard to find in more modern games. Countless unforgettable situations and descriptions from the Zork series have become iconic in more contemporary fiction, both printed and interactive.
With such timeless and absolutely enthralling games, set in a crazy, surreal world, packed with a witty narrative and sarcastic, dark humor, what's there not to love?
So light your bronze lantern, pick up that Elvish sword of great antiquity and embark on a journey to (re)discover the world of Zork. You will not be disappointed.

Vagabond: A tip: Keep your voice really loud on the matter and it will be addressed (See: Gobliiins' floppy version, Septerra Core fix, Broken Sword 1 download, et. al.)
Well, I guess I'll try to keep my voice loud on this matter then :)

To be honest I don't really know what's missing, but hearing that there is missing material still makes me yearn for it. I buy too many games and don't have time to play them all, and I mostly still buy games on GOG because of the awesome extra materials that I always love.

It feels so weird - even though I haven't had time yet to play at least 20 of the games I have here, I still don't feel like it's been wasted money. It's a great feeling of nostalgia looking through old manuals (back from the days when games came with real manuals, with some art, story and stuff in them, instead of just installation instructions) and it's extremely interesting to me when there's things like concept art and the like. In short, the extras make sure that I always find value in GOG-releases, even when the games I buy go straight to my ever growing backlog.

So if there is (as people say) a significant amount of material missing from the extras to this release, I would certainly appreciate it if they could be added.

Either way I've bought the pack now, and I hope I'll have some time for the games. It's been a long time since I played any text adventures.

GingeR13: Wow. this release can be used as definition for what is and what brings GOG.

Zork and police quest serie as GOG? checked. checked. checked. ;)

i think i'll buy it soon alongside with police quest serie [all 4 in one !!]

so - since we have here classic GOG like Zork serie, and and relatively modern GOG like Broken Sword Directors cut, maybe there IS a chance for other adventures - in_between [shadow of the comet - version with mouse support ;) is one of my dream requests for GOG.

and it's great that GOG is for everyone out there - action, rpg, strategies, adventures.

Again - thx gog!
You know, I think I have the CD of that someplace.
I'll probably pick this up when it goes on sale. Mostly just to revisit Zork out of curiosity. I always see the Zork games on the lists of top games. I had one of these games ( II or III I think ) for the Comodore 64. It was one of the most frustrating games I ever tried to play and I quit pretty early. I sometimes wonder if these people who make lists are right and I should have been more persistant.

As I recall, the game play goes something like this:

1. Try to tell the game what you want to do and it doesn't understand.

2. The game finally understands what you want to do and tells you that you can't do it.

3. You were eaten by a grue.

The thing to realise is that there are only so many commands a game like this will really understand. It helps once you realise what they are. Zork 1, 2 and 3 in particular are among the more primitive examples of their kind, largely due to their immense age. Though this doesn't stop them having some bastard hard puzzles. (in particular, the baseball one is a doozy).

The main thing to keep in mind is that a puzzle in the game is almost never solved with the command "kill" unless you're playing Doom - The Text Adventure, certain Trolls notwithstanding

BoxOfSnoo: How so? It takes the .DAT files un-renamed just fine.

Darling_Jimmy: True, but I can't get Zork Zero to run. Got any tips?
Alas, that's one I don't have. And hardly worth getting this mini-collection just for that (and Planetfall). Maybe after a sale I'll get back to you.

No rush. I was lucky enough to snag iDOS when it was briefly in the App Store so I can always launch the Zork games in that. But maybe one day I'll solve the mystery of Frotz... one day...

It might just be the iPhone version of Frotz that's at fault. IIRC, regular PC Frotz will handle Z6 easily, whether or not the graphic file is present. The Z6 file format is a bit of a mess as I recall - it was added to piecemeal as an attempt to find a formula that would help sell Infocom's games in the 16bit age, as graphics began to become more and more important. (You can see a similar effect in other major adventure games of that period, sadly).

I'm quite sure you're right. All the same, I hope to discover a fix.

Checking out iphone Frotz's google code site indicates that the author(s) are already aware of the problem, but consider it low priority.

I can wait.
It's great that gog is helping to keep these old classics alive, though I'm more interested in these games for gaming history than for fun.

I would like to play Return to Zork again though. Perhaps it will see a re-release here as well?

Want some rye? 'Course ya do!
I know I'm late (work has been a pain) but. TOTALLY nabbing this.

(need the remainder of the Zork stuff.)

(Yes, yes I did also pay for Hadean Lands. And yes, I probably will try to run this via the javascript interpreter.)

Semi OT, but iDOS has just reappeared in the iTunes store, without iTunes file sharing... however, I found a way to do it anyway :) http://forums.toucharcade.com/showpost.php?p=1546797&postcount=54

It's free now, instead of 99 cents, too.
Another to my collection
Definitely in my wishlist. Hope this anthology is only a prelude to text adventures anthology, Infocom, Level9, Magnetic Scrolls and so on. But it is of utmost importance that all the documentation is properly and fully scanned when possible, a very difficult task today with HR pics of eventual gadgets that came with the original box.
