As the last release from the first batch of the huge deal with Electronic Arts, we’re giving you a chance to become a wizard that needs to save the world.

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/magic_carpet]Magic Carpet is an extraordinary action shooter game from the acclaimed Bullfrog Productions. All magic wielders are battling between themselves for the most valuable resource (no, not oil) - mana. Casting huge meteor showers or invoking a terrifying thunder storm, one could summon a castle in the middle of an ocean or just create a volcano right on top of this little harmless village. If you’re not the type of guy that likes to let the hell loose you could always just throw fireballs here and there or just summon a massive skeleton army to plow your way through the plethora of hostile creatures. Apart from other wizards and genies fighting you over the oh so precious mana, you’ll encounter various fantasy monsters ready to devour you (like a hydra or a dragon) or convert mana into more monsters (like the crabs do ;)).

Apart from this awesome flying-carpet action you can slow down a take a look at the normal lives of the townsfolk to admire the normal day to day activities that the AI performs. And if we’re on the subject of AI, the one controlling the opposing wizards is exceptional even when looking from today’s perspective.
If you ever wanted to live the life of a carpet-zooming wizard now you can! Want to do much more than just sing-along “A Whole New World” with the prince and the princess? Then this is the game for you!
I never enjoyed this game, for several reasons, and I'm a fan of similar games like Terminal Velocity (okay, that's kind of a stretch). But I know this game has a huge following of insane adoring fans, so it's a great title to add to the site, GOG.
so it's not even Magic Carpet Plus? Meh, skipping it..
Give me Magic Carpet 2, and you've got a sale.

MichaelPalin: The first thing that comes to my mind when looking at this game is: there has to be a mod that expands the viewing distance, isn't it?
The game is 17 years old, and back then games were not mod friendly.
I have to laugh at people who buy a 17 year old fame and then bitch about the graphics.

Galimatias: As mentioned before, due to legal/licensing issues we couldn't provide the bonus content on release, but we're working with EA on it and will do everything we can to bring the EA releases to our top notch standard in terms of goodies.

Cheers!

skdyer: I think it is quite strange to call an expansion like Alien Crossfire "bonus content" or a "goodie". I hope that the use of that expression wasn't a sly intentional way of indicating that there is no hope of ever getting the expansions and that all you are working on is getting bonus stuff like soundtracks and avatars. Can you clarify?
They arn't trying to "trick us". When has GoG ever used "sly intentional ways of hinting that there is no hope" of getting an expansion? They said they are working on it. Chill.
Game looks really fun, but I'll wait until the expansion is added before I buy. I'd rather get the whole thing at once.
Can't wait to blare some Steppenwolf and Aladdin while I finally get a chance to play this game.

How about this from gog August 26, 2009 regarding sly, and never following through. Nearly 2 years and nothing.

Deva: I've played around with it a bit, and it is as low-res as I remember. Still fun though, especially after you get more spells and progress through the levels. Mouse is a bit touchy, but I'm getting used to it.

Sad thing though, there is a "hi-res" mode that make the graphics look a bit better, (press R) but it really slows down the framerate. A LOT. Guess my GeForce 8800 and Quad Core can't handle it. :-/

Oh well, I can live with low res. At least the reflection, sky, and other graphic options don't slow things down. (Don't turn "soften image" or "speed blur" on though... bleh.)
You should check the dosbox confing that is in the release. Maybe it's not set to max cycles, or cpu not set to auto (like rayman, that had it on dynamic). Also, can try to give it a little more memory, if not set to 8 or 16. Finally try running it in a window, without aspect ration correction, maybe hq2x shader. Should be able to handle it.
so, I've played MC2 a lot back in the old days, and it was veeeery good. from the screens it looks very similar, so what's the difference between those two parts?

also, I've used joystick to play, and now I don't have any... :( is the key/mouse control ok or do I need a joypad or something?

I originally had the Saturn version. I'm used to playing with a keypad - and I'll probably go back to that with this release, because the keyboard controls are not adjustable, and the mouse control is... reverse of what I expect. I could get used to it, but I don't think I will bother - I have a working control pad and that is how I learned, and enjoyed, the game.

--- addressing strange complaints from people on a site for good OLD games - obviously not the same people who whine that some games aren't old enough, but the people whining about... man you people love whining (: ---

As I had the Saturn version and played on a largescreen TV, I just plain do not understand the 'lo-res' complaints. I played, and enjoyed thoroughly, the game when the pixels were about... well, they were possibly 1cmx1cm. For US people, about the size of a dime each. The game was FUN then and you didn't whine about the pixels because if you did you were missing the point of the game - HAVING FUN BEING A WIZARD ON A MAGIC CARPET, BLOWING STUFF UP.

I also don't understand the "WAAAAH THIS DOESN'T HAVE ALL THE CONTENT YET" whining. I had the Saturn version. It came with ... what is on offer here. You got a Saturn CD, and you played it, and there was no "additional content." It was still fun. In fact, it's why I bought it, because I don't have my saturn here, and I can now resume playing the game - which I _thoroughly_ enjoy.

If you like fun, and the idea of flying around on a carpet blowing things up - occasionally building your own castle (complete with dudes who shoot opposing wizards) with increasingly difficult levels - sounds like fun - get the game.

If you prefer whining because this doesn't come with a free yacht and a year's worth of champagne and caviar - man you have a WHACKED idea of what fun is.

Thanks for the reminder! I played around with the config file and found a nice combination of settings that make it run smoothly at the higher resolution available. It looks a lot better than the standard resolution now. Thanks again!

hedwards: They're not below standard, they work well, are fun and are inexpensive.
This statement is false based upon GoG own comments and any objective review of their standard. You don't get to redefine 'standard' if you don't like the consequences of the using the definition.

I think people that want to play the game right now and don't have their own copy buried on a shelf should buy it from here right now. Everybody else should hold off.

Mr. GoG makes extra content one of their selling points every time I've ever seen them comment on why their model should/does work. For example their about page says "Buying the game is just the beginning. With the purchase of any game at GOG.com you'll also get some great additional materials for free, including game guides, walkthroughs, MP3 game soundtracks, wallpapers and more. No joke."

Now they list other items beyond extras as selling points. If they stop doing other items is it going to be ok with you? If it won't be ok with you that they stop doing some other key point, why can't other people feel the same about different key points? Objectively, is your evaluation of the order of importance of GoGs selling points "mo' better" than other peoples evaluation? Everybody has their own unique ordered list of things that are important to them at their current point in life, everybody is right for themselves, for right then.

For me personally, extra content is what usually pushes me over the edge for the purchase and I'm posting this info so Mr. GoG knows why I've been spending my throwaway money elsewhere for the last several months. Now I probably wouldn't have purchased Magic Carpet anyway just based on history, but I probably would have picked up something from EA that I would have placed on my "I'm going to play it Real Soon Now (tm)" stack if it had a soundtrack that I would have immediately added to my music server, icons which I would have thrown in my pile of icons for family use, and wallpaper which I would have immediately put in my wallpaper shuffler, any dev notes/movies that I would have immediately viewed. If GoG feels that I"m not their market, so be it. If they think I am their marked, then they should realize that their product is no longer working for me. One person, one data point. No more, no less.

As for the on topic part:

I looked it up and Magic Carpet came with some of the 3D Shutter glasses (actually it probably still does), which would be why I had it, played it briefly and dismissed it back in the day. I'm sure that copy is in a box somewhere if GoG needs some extras or help finding whatever shutter driver was used.

This has always been an inexplicable absence from my collection. Wish listed.
