We’re completing the Gothic trilogy on GOG.com. Gothic 3 - the latest part of adventures is available now for only $9.99!

You are the Nameless Hero, the one who defeated the Avatar of the Sleeper god. The same hero who dealt with his four minions. Now it’s time to explore the kingdom of Myrtana. The Orcs have won the war and now humans are mere orc slaves. A conflict is waging between three distinct factions: the triumphant Orcs, the rebels loyal to the King Rhobar, and the hashishin - a guild of assassins with an unknown goal or origin. Your ultimate goal will require you to ally with one of the factions and help them achieve their objectives.

Character Progression is similar to the earlier installments of Gothic. Level up with experience, and quest completion, learn new skills and talents with points you get for every level up. The combat system was revisited, now it boasts more combo moves, optional full mouse controls, and your hero is able to use shields to improve his blocking abilities. Further, Rune-Magic has disappeared from the land, leaving only the magic of the ancients intact but scattered across Myrtana in form of ancient scrolls. Finding these scrolls is key to learning and using powerful magic to defeat your foes.

The most visible change from Gothic 2 is the new graphics engine, which looks stunning even now. The rich, vivid world of Myrtana is open for you to explore, but be aware of the dangerous beasts and monsters lurking deep inside the wilderness. You are free to go wherever you want, and lots of side-quests are available to lengthen your playthrough. Experience a great open-world RPG where your decisions can alter the course of a whole continent.

Check out the whole Gothic franchise on GOG and grab the newest installment for only $9.99.
waltc,
thanks for the very important informations that you've posted.
a very nice post.
I am re-posting the above statement for those of you who missed it the first time around. Considering how great this game is after patching and installing mods, and also how little money it takes to own your very own DRM-free copy, this is a must-buy for RPG lovers.

Trilarion: I see that GOG doesn't want to support anything more than the basic version, but they could easily host the community patch themselves or put a direct link on a prominent place like the gamecard for instance, if they really wanted to.

Lexor: Do not forget that GOG is not charity service - it is business. So they cant include even free files without strict permission from its authors. In case of fan patches it could be sometimes hard to find the right person. Also, GOG has signed agreement with G3 developer and it could include some rules. Also adding patch to the game = adding full support for it (imagine users who will later post some bugs on forum regarding community patch).
I cannot imagine that the G3 rights holders would want to forbid GOG to host the community patch, since it improves the game alot and should boost sales. But if so it would be kind of futile, since users would anyway inform themselves, but not as fast. It would merely be just inefficient, not to inform them in the first place. Also the developer of the community patch would probably be glad to have it hosted here, since they work for free, the penetration of their patch is kind of reward for their work and they would save costs. If the authors cannot be contacted, it would depend on the license. Maybe it's a "Do whatever you want" license. I think it probably is only the support. Possible bugs induced by the community patch - GOG doesn't want to take the risk and promise anything about it. But that's okay, they don't need to.

They can still post a link on a prominent place, eg. like the gamecard.

And I tried the game both with and without the community patch and always stopped after one or two other cities and my impression was, that without the community patch the game is not good in my eyes. Very unbalanced, very incoherent story. So GOG skipped already the O in their name, now they want to go after the G?

It's just a service to provide additional game data like soundtracks, manuals, ... fan community patches in form of links or downloads. I thought it's GOG's aim to provide the most full game experience possible. The differentiation between fan-made and original company made seems artificial to me.

Btw I argumented not from the view of a charity service, but from a business view. I think it makes sense. It will increase the experience alot and by that result in increased sales.

Trilarion: -snip-
You make a great case, and from GOG's perspective I'm sure they would like to provide the best experience possible. Unfortunately, from a business perspective, Nordic doesn't have a single good reason to support this. Nordic has a) already released two new entries in the Gothic series they want to support and b) no longer has the rights to the Gothic brand, so they really don't have any substantial financial reason to spend a single extra dime on Gothic 3. Unfortunately the vast majority of the market doesn't love old games nearly as much as we do, so it's not really a big enough market for the publisher to put the extra effort in that GOG is looking for (look at some of the barebones EA releases, for example).

Besides, I'll bet you GOG's just going to put up a Mod Spotlight in the near future, like they did for most buggy games (the Planescape mod guide, for example).

As for the rights to the mod? Some modders are tricky creatures. You'd think they'd be thrilled to be included in the main game, but look at all the issues Mojang has had with Minecraft modders demanding compensation when one of their ideas is built into the Vanilla experience (two words: Potioncraft Guy).

Paczyk: Yes, the 1.74 is installable on 1.6.
Thanks, that's nice to know. I'll probably pick this up when the Xmas sale starts this week.

waltc: Mods, Mods, Mods:

This is *the* site to see for all of your Gothic-related needs--textures, play mods, etc.:

Great Gothic Resource
Thanks a lot for those informations. I'll now play the game with Quest-pack and Content-Mod on top of the Community Patch. Very exciting prospect !

Speaking of mods for this game, the big one to watch out for is the community story project, which is by the same people as the community patch. It will be a massive update to the game, making the structure much more like the first two games. It might even come out around Christmas, though they haven't made that official.

Tsugirai: Huge letdown, I actually hate this series.

jefequeso: why?
I never got anywhere with 1. I kept finding enemies against whom my char didn't stand a chance and quests I couldn't complete due to skills/abilities needed, I figured I should have to grind but grinding was very slow and tiring. Actually I almost skipped out on the WItcher because I thought it was like Gothic.
I'm going to buy that one in case GOG adds community patch to extras. Don't want to buy the game now, and start playing it somewhere during the summer only to find out that 1.74 is no longer available.

You silly person, witcher is nothing like Gothic. You see, Witcher is a good game!

Seriously, I hated that about Gothic too, it felt so artificial...
I think, I might sin against GOG and grab G3 on GG where it's on a spiffy sale. Along with a few other games to get on the 4 for 3 offer and not pay a cent for it, since I have a stock of bonus BC.
Gothic 3 is a great game in my opinion. Even without the community patch I loved it enough to finish it (and after the offical patches there was not a plethora of bugs for me). I must have played Gothic 3 well over 100 hours, without a restart. I would reccommend it to anyone who likes big-world open-ended RPG's, and those who just like wandering the desert sands, verdant fields, or icy slopes. Thank you GOG for releasing this title, it's one of my favorite 'newer' RPG's. =D
Meanwhile DotEmu got Gothic 1,2,3 for $20.
And here, from monday, Gothic 1,2,3 will be $15.
Smart enough?

mobutu: Smart enough?
The initial unedited announcement of the GOG holiday sale specifically excluded Piranha Bytes (and Codemasters) as sale participants. Damned if I know, whether it means that GOG just didn't want to announce it, or that they will be on sale.
