Looking for a monitor in the 19-23 inch range that does an excellent job
of rendering the very dark scenes commonly found in video games.
I need to stay in the under $300.00 price range.
My current 23 inch AOC is OK for everyday use but makes seeing dark
scenes nearly impossible.
I've spent a year trying too get it adjusted and enough is enough!
I'm tired of playing only 'bright' games. ;-)

I'd go for a Dell IPS display. Even though they are not the fastest ones out there, they have good colors and deep black.
Something like the U2412M. If I remember right Licurg also bought one and I haven't heard a complaint :).

I noticed that IPS displays tend to run at .7ms, is that going to be a big deal?

I'm no expert but I think you want an as high contrast ratio as possible. Darkness after all is relative, with your eyes adjusting to the amount of light in your field of vision (probably more complicated that if you want to get technical). You could also consider installing some soft lights behind/around your screen on the wall so that you never play in pitch black either.

edit : By the way : a monitor, especially a good quality one, is a long term investment. I bought a high quality 24'' LG one several years back and have since regretted not having dished out a little more to buy a 27'' monitor :P

I'm not too sensible about that, but I've played FPSs on the one I have here and I haven't seen any ghosting, so I don't think so. The 3ms &co. TN displays are just marketing imho anyway.

I have a small lamp to provide some light as you suggest.
I am looking for a monitor with very high 'natve' contrast as you mention.
Problem is manufacturers specs suck as far as giving this spec, that's why I'd
like to hear from people that have found a good one.
The contrast is usually given as 'dynamic contrast' which is pretty meaningless
as far as very dark scenes are concerned. Thanks, that's one less spec to worry too much about. ;) I have a very small place to play in so if I go too big I actually have to turn my head to see the whole screen! :-)

As the verdicts say, for hardcore fps gamers there are faster displays out there. However you can't have both (speed and color fidelity) in the same time.

I think it is easy to get lost in all the technical details - I know I would. If I were you I'd simply pick a good quality Samsung monitor from a reputable seller, look at some of reviews until I'm convinced its a high quality product, and buy it. If it's a really good quality monitor then most of your bases should be covered in any case. If I wanted to accentuate darkness even further, I'd make sure the lightning around my screen is sufficient and adjust the gamma and contrast slider in either the game's settings or in the gpu's control panel.

I've heard the AOC 1440p 27` is really good at 1080p scaling, just wondering if it scales lower resolutions as well.

Try a monitor with a va/pva screen, it has the deepest blacks mankind can possibly produce right now.
Be aware of the cons of the new ips/va technics do, something about a shine ?
I too was going to buy a new monitor but i luckly postponed it one week, during that time i got a small brain stroke that took away one quarter of my eye sight, i have gotten better now and regained some sight. But untill 100% recovery im going to stick with my old 19 inch lcd hp monitor.

I don't know if LG sells monitors but I have an LG TV for two years and it's freakin awesome and preferably get something with LED backlight, not those glow discharge if these are still being sold.

I just got one of these recently and am very happy with it. The best 16:10 monitor I could find for the money.
