So, last night I thought I would download Aion and give it a try.

When I start the launcher, it shows that the game is installed but needs to be updated. I click on update and... nothing. The launcher stops responding. I have to go into task manager and stop it from running.

It runs Guild Wars perfectly fine, no problems there. But for some reason, trying to do anything with Aion crashes it.

Anybody play this and have any thoughts or similar problem?
Have you activated the installation? Dunno if that would affect the update, but it would stop you actually playing the game.

IIRC you should get a verification email, then you follow the link and choose which games to "activate".
Aion is a bit tricky. If you notice it saying "Trickle updating" it's gathering basic info before updating itself.

Also, the NCSoft Launcher is notorious for freezing when it's updating itself, with or without your permission.

All in all Aion is definitely worth a shot, so I'd run the launcher, click update, and walk away for 5 minutes till it figures out whether to shit or get off the pot. After that, you should have no further issues.

Also, it's important to run the game/launcher as administrator if you have UAC enabled.
Launch or have it run as an admin and compatibility mode works for me.
I have the EU version installed so no NCsoft Launcher for me. I will probably uninstall the Launcher once City of Heroes is laid to rest.
