Bolwerk: I gotta say from all the games I've played, the Metal Slug series (any of 'em) were pretty damn hard... Mind you, as frustrating as they were, it's still one of my all time favourite franchises.

Yes, Metal Slug is an arcade port at its best. In fact, besides pool and air hockey, that's all I play at our local arcade. Ah, memories.
I wish my local arcade still had a few of the Metal Slug machines. Got the MS Anthology on Wii... Not bad, but really need an arcade stick to play those games properly.

Mine still does since I'm in hickass Texas. =)
But I have access to a few of the games on my PSP so no complaints.

rayven998: Battlecruiser Millenium..... I've been playing this thing over at Gametap for about a month now, and I still don't know what the hell I'm doing.

I tried that.....Dsmart of 3000AD has a...'peculariar" design ethos that really narrows the scope of the target audience for his titles.
His new one, All Aspect War has potential though.
I dont know the name but there is one Flight Simulator where you have to start your plane from a carrier at the first mission. I NEVER Managed to do that without instantly dropping into the water.
After 1 hour of trying, reloading, trying, reloading, etc. I managed to get the plane in the Air (Dont ask me how) and got instantly shot down by an enemy pilot.
Afterwards I uninstalled the game and played some games that where actually fun =)
sounds very familiar.
I've played the demo , never managed to get the thing flying and never played flight sim from that moment :)
Don't know if it has already be mentioned, but this is a game I've played so many times as a kid, on my good old C64, and never finished it.
As I've just replayed it on emulation, I instantly remembered that the game had a really good atmosphere for its time, nice simple graphics, and a very very high difficulty!
The game is Cauldron II.
The ever-bouncing character can really be a nightmare, but I love this game.
The first game of the Cauldron series was very very hard too, but I've never had the chance to play it back then.

Ois: This one whatever it is. I never could get past level 1 when I tired it a good while back.

That was too funny to watch, and likely too painful to play! Thanks for sharing that!
I'd have to say the Dizzy games on the ZX Spectrum. No saves, pixel perfect jumping and you'd pretty much die if you even brushed an enemy/obstacle.
I'd like to throw in X-Com :Terror From The Deep as well. Enemy's would grenade spam you, they'd hide in closets, take over your own men with mental powers. Brilliant game though.
Also more recently, any driving level in the Mafia on the PS1. The cars handled like a bugger and if you damaged them, you had to restart the level. That was stupidly fristrating

OMG yes I remember Mafia when it came out... I LOVED it but that particular racing mission - think it was the fourth or fifth real mission you had to do.... MAN that was SO SHIT. I think I must have spent at least four days just restarting over and over because, as you said, if you damage the car, you're fucked. God that was sooo frustrating.
I had it on PC.
And I still remember the moment I finally won that race, I was like "YEAH NEVER AGAIN!!!" I never did play it again.
I'm sure there were a ton of hard games in my NES and SNES days but I don't remember a lot of them. Honestly the one that stands out to me right now is Section 8's horrible fake campaign mode, which I stopped playing halfway through because of an escort mission I swear to God is impossible.
The last mission of the first Driver game was pretty darn hard. I remember replaying this mission a dozen times before I finally succeeded.
TIE Fighter Battle 13, especially on Hard difficulty. Curse you, Zaarin!
Battletoads broke me. For the life of me I couldn't get past that horrible level where you have to jump over and dodge crap on the flying jet skis. That level brought controller throwing rage.
Super Ghosts'nGoblins. Oh, to hell with this game.
These games were not challenging as in they required skill to play, they were challenging in that they were designed so stupid that the only reason the games took more than half an hour to beat is because they designed it specifically so you'd die a lot to pad the game out. Or it sure felt like it anyway. >.<

Agree. Rep given for reminding me of Battletoads... I got to the exact same level and never could get past it... =\
And don't fricking remind me of G&G. Which just reminded me of another hard one...
ALEX SMEGGING KIDD IN MIRACLE WORLD! Seriously, that game was bullshit.

Which one of the 4/5 are we talking about here? the first one was easy you could memorise it in 2-3 lives no problem the last one took about a week of constant death to memorise the route through (by that stage your going so fast you almost have to do it by memory alone)
