frostcircus: lowyhong, then what was up with your comparisons? Doom has no constantly respawning enemies (unless you count Nightmare mode, map30, or levels with Arch-Viles, none of which do it the same distinctive way as the CoD series), and you have no team-mates.
For the record, I love Doom, and enjoy the CoD series a lot, especially 4. CoD1-3 (and 5) all had variable, repetitive and overall meaningless campaigns, but 4 is one of the best I've played in any genre. It's a great showcase for brevity, variety and polish.
Read my previous posts, my point was that COD's gameplay harkens back to older school gaming, with an added layer of varnish. Regarding your query on Doom, I did think of Archviles and Pain Elementals. I've also been playing Doom with the "Respawning monsters" and "More monsters" option on the newer ports, so that also contributes to the comparison
I didn't actually play the full length of COD4, only certain levels at a friend's place. We took turns playing and watching each other play. While I enjoyed COD4 more than other overrated FPS titles, I just can't help feeling that the game's more of the same. Like I said, the polish is there, but the game just doesn't surprise me much. It's a solid title, but I still think there are equally good or better games out there not given the same recognition that COD4 received
It's fine that you like COD4, and you're welcome to disagree, but let me just remind you that this is my opinion.
