I know it sounds like an oxymoron, but what are your fav modern games with a retro look and feel in mind? As like with the other topic, it does not matter if it's official, fan made, or Indie.

Both of these Indie games are very well made, and are quite challenging.

The only problem is... it's not released yet. It looks so much like the classic 2D adventure games of old that it just can't be bad :)

Ah, Iji is awesome, great, great-great and fantastic, but what's retro about it?

The graphics and gameplay of course, but not the music. It looks alot like the adventure games of the early 1990's. You know, games such as Another World and Flashback.

I liked Iji, but still didn't finish it. I didn't like the combat all that much and even though you practically got choices like hacking the enemy, kicking him or anything, it doesn't change a lot. It's a good game, nonetheless, but not quite my type.
On the other hand I totally loved La-Mulana, it is a very great game. So why the hell does it have to be so very hard? It's not even that fighting is frustrating or so, I am just constantly left absolutely clueless as to what I have to do next. I watched several of DiseasedCrabs's very nice "Let's play La-Mulana" videos on YouTube as guides and was able to go on playing this, but I don't want to do it like this. It's really a shame, because it's such a big game and very well done, but I won't go on playing it :/

It is seen by many as the pinnacle of indie gaming, and while I definitely wouldn't go that far, I still think it is a superb retro game in every respect. Play it! :)
Then there is Bonesaw, another great retro platformer (). The combat could have been done better, but it is still a very appealing and challenging game. I didn't finish it because it got too repetitive after a while, but I still listen to the awesome soundtrack by Josh Whelchel. Yeah, La-Mulana is HARD! I'm still stuck trying to figure out what the heck i'm supposed to do next. It's almost like you can't really play the game without a strategy guide. There should at least be a guide where it just gives you hints or riddles, so you can still figure it out for your self instead of being told what to do next.

Like I said the "Let's play..." videos serve as a very helpful walkthrough and especially in the first ones DeceasedCrab explains some general aspects of the game which you might not find out by yourself when you first play the game. So anyone who plays La-Mulana should at least watch a few of them: :)

It may look a lot, but I bet if creator had better resources, he would have made it an FPS game :D He says himself it's inspired by System Shock :D
I like freedom of choice in this game, and presentation of story. And of course 'kill or not kill' concept

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mega Man 9 yet. I bought it and i'm enjoying it very much. This is a true homage to the classic Mega Man games from the NES. They even added the glitchy animation and lag as an option to make it feel like you were playing it on a NES. But of course it has the modern convenience of saving your progress instead of using passwords. Also, you can download additional content such as Protoman being a playable character.

I love Darwinia for its retro feeling. And i must say Castle Crashers on the Xbox 360 feels like back in the day when beat'em ups was hot and new.
