hedwards: Indeed. I'm not even sure why this is up for debate. Michael Jackson was the King of Pop for a reason. Sure, Queen had some outstanding music, but they're not really in the same league as Michael Jackson, between his work with the Jackson 5 and his solo work.

It's just that Queen was never really that big outside the UK as far as I can tell. MJ OTOH, is still huge, here in China he's probably one of the 3 most popular recording artists, and the only one that's likely to still be popular 10 years from now.

Red_Avatar: Eh what? Queen wasn't really that big in the US, that's it. They were big all over the world. With Michael Jackson, he was more a legend than anything else with only a few songs really being well known.

Queen also mastered many different genres, had very clever songs, wrote ALL their own music, performed all their own music, did amazing LIVE shows which weren't doing with ropes & pulleys, etc. etc. etc.

As much as I respected MJ, he was more about the life style, the man, than about the music. He was popular because he was a wierdo and I can't help but wonder whether he'd be remembered so well if he didn't have such an odd life style.

Also if you want to see who is the best singer, listen to some demos of them both and realise Freddie's voice is far superior in general.

So yeah, Freddie Mercury all the way!
I can't agree with this at all.

And no, Queen wasn't ever as big as Michael Jackson was in the US as far as I can tell, apart from some people that really knew Queen's music, you'd have a hard time getting most people in the US to come up with a longer lists of songs for Queen than for MJ. And I'm confident that remains the case even if you exclude the recordings that MJ put out after Freddie died.

And seriously, weirdo? That didn't come until after the main part of MJ's career was over. He'd had massive hits with both the Jackson 5 and on his own by that point. The really strange stuff didn't come until the early '90s. By the time the weird stuff came up his career was more or less moribund and the weirdness was doing far more harm than good as far as record sales go.
"weirdo" is pretty harsh. I obviously favor Freddie but he was a strange dude in his own right. Hell, I love Iggy Pop, have you ever seen him!?

To quote David Lee Roth, "I don't look like this because I'm in a band; I'm in a band because I look like this."
As much as I love music made by both of them and QUEEN is my favorite band I have to go with Michael Jackson. He is one of most recognizable artists in the world. Plus even thou I'm in China they still play his music here. Hearing They dont care about us in Beijing near Tienanmen Square is experience of a lifetime.
And I have to say that I'm surprised with the amount of love for Mercury while downplaying Jackson as some kind of weirdo and stuff. Maybe I'm from some different planet but Jackson was bigger than life and his concerts were like nothing else (not to say that I didnt love QUEEN concerts).
Both, dammit!

Can't really say who "influenced" me more, so...
And I can rock on all of their hits like crazy, anyway ;)

I'll give that a big +1.

Thanks (and now you have a rep of 100 ;) - or that's what should have happened after me repping the post, at least :D).

But to be honest, I've never thought about comparing these guys. They've been always legends for me with really inspiring and motivating songs, each of them with a different message.
And for me, it's all about the songs, not about what and how they were (don't mean this in a negative way, but somebody said that MJ was popular because he was a "weirdo"...)!

The show must go on, you smooth criminals =)

To lighten the mood...
Freddie made better soundtracks. Nothing against "Ben" but it was NO "Flash Gordon"!
Freddie "I don't touch kids" Mercury.

Yessss, feel the burnnn.

Q: What do Michael Jackson's house and Sears have in common?

A: Little boys pants half off.

I'd like to thank all of the tasteless people out there who supported me in my quest to achieve the title of "Supreme Jackass" in telling that joke.

Elmofongo: ....Sigh this is a hard one to make I take it, both are so different yet so similar at the same time for me so who do you think is better, Michael Jackson or Freddie Mercury?
Is it even a valid question? Freddie of course!!!!

Freddie Mercury all the way. That man made anthems. Michael made pop music.
