McDon: I'm kinda interested in this whenever it comes out. It's by a Bioshock dev and it's where you're an AI turned sentient in a game-in-development and you've to rewrite the game to your suiting in order to be "free". All the while, you've to hide from the devs by disguising your actions as just simple glitches.
That sounds trippy and awesome! I would try it out for sure.

amok: The Metagame?
OH
MY
GOD
:D
Also a few other examples that I think could technically be considered metagames (although deconstrucing games could be a better term): Syobon Action (better known as Cat Mario), Default Dan and Eryi's Action, where the games go against everything you learned from other games and sometimes even go against their own rules.

And for a bonus, here's this little gem: Handheld Video Game.
It only goes meta at one point, but wow, what a point it is. :D
Deadpool game often breaks the fourth wall, much like comic book.
Does Glitchhikers count as a metagame?
well saints row 4 is pretty meta
its a video game that takes place ina video game ( virtual reality ) and has all sorts of nudges winks and references to other games
one mission is a parody of the metal gear series
and it also makes references to it self ( the player characters from saints row 1 show up as default player 1 2 and 3 ) and a host more

I don't know. Why should it count as one? :)

self referential and usually fourth wall breaking

ie being aware its a video game or commenting on video game tropes

saints row 4's mission from asha with love is both a parody and fourth wall breaking

deadpools game is incredibley meta

Ohh...ok. Thanks, I think I got it now.
Cardhunter is kinda meta because your character is a teenager who is playing a tabletop RTS/RPG called 'Cardhunter' I assume Knights of Pen and Paper is a bit like that too but I haven't played that one

Thomas Was Alone is almost like Stanley - the 2D platform game, the narrator is VERY similar!

Speaking of Stanley, if you've only played the original, free Half Life mod remember that the free demo of the new full game has completely different content to either the full game or the original mod!

Not only self-referential, but also games about games - collecting the cards in Steam, for example, is a metagame.

Or it can be a gamification of games - achievements in games are metagames

Now that you mention it, here's another example :D

yeah, there are a lot of those games.

Achievement Unlocked is one of the series (I still prefer #3 :)), another is the Upgrade Complete games. But going down this route, you also have games like DLC Quest, You Only Live Once and others.
