I thought like buying Max Payne 1 & 2 from Steam today because I watched a few gameplay vids and thought that I would enjoy it. I sure am.
However, when I started the game up (first one) the sound or some particular sounds did not play. So of course I searched the interwebz and I came across this http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=741118.
This was great, I downloaded the thing, and started extracting it however I hadn't gone down further enough to see a user say that it had a keylogger. I panicked and stopped the extraction stuff that was going on. I looked down further and a user said to another concerned user that he scanned it and got a website to scan it (with all anti virus software) and said that it came up with no results, so everything should be okay right?
I deleted the whole directory and re-downloaded the game and fixed it by using Creativity ALchemy. Runs like a charm. However, I still have my worries. I did do a registry clean with CCleaner and as I said deleted everything in the directory permenantly. But I am still very skecpticle...
Any thoughts?

My thoughts . . .
From your description, I don't believe you ever ran the exe that would install a key logger. I would run my AV program and my spyware program ( I like Spybot Search and Destroy). If you get no positive hits from either . . . you should be safe. . . . =)
Download MalwareBytes and run a scan and/or do an online scan yourself just to make sure.
Anyway, from looking briefly at that thread, isn't that file, the one someone said had a keylogger, just an early version of the file on the stickied thread on the MaxPayne boards ? That's the feeling i get from the posts of the guy who apparently created the patch in the first place, DarkjeThe2nd.

The fact that the poster who suggested it was a keylogger is banned from the Steam community means there's probably nothing to worry about.

Well I know if something happened Avast would have lit like a wild forest fire. But I installed SpyBot and it worked like a charm. Found about 11 different things (probably from other things of which I didn't know about). So I am clean and immunized. I have never used an anti spybot program before, which I probably should have.
Thanks very much to everybody for their posts. I think I am probably a tad paranoid. But you can never be too safe.

Updates for Spybot S&D are released every Wednesday BTW. Just be sure to immunize after each update. I especially like the ability to right click my DL's and scan with Spybot. Been using it for several years with great success . . .=)
