I heard it was something to do with mostly promoting Music CDs.

Fuck Kindle though I hate it worse than all other things combined best read from an actual paper Book. It just feels wrong reading a thousand page book from Battery Powered device that will be replaced. The only thing you ahve to worry about when it come to books is do your best to preseve it and keep it in good condition. Don't let food/drinks get on it, Don't let animals destroy it and try your best to not accidently rip pages.
What bothers me about stores closing down is people losing their jobs. People losing jobs is bad for everyone.

Exactly if the internt takes over where are people gonna work at buildings where they maintain the servers?

Even telemarketers?

I love the Kindle. Maybe for you, it seems retarded because you don't see a NEED for it but it's great for people like me. It's great for people who love reading in the dark before going to sleep and for people who move around a lot. If you move around a lot, having to pack all your books and carry them in heavy boxes every time you move is a pain in the ass. The Kindle is also great for people who travel around a lot and for people who don't like books taking up too much space in their home. Imagine you are traveling for some months. Well with a kindle, you can easily travel with hundreds of books... And without a kindle, could you do that? Carry hundreds of books in your luggage? And a Kindle is also a mobile book store. In the mood for a new book? Just go some place where there is wireless internet and buy a new book from amazon with your kindle.

hedwards: Indeed, in this day and age if you want to stay in that business you have to offer something special. All of the video rental places that we went to when I was a kid have been out of business for years.

There's another one in the neighborhood that's likely to be there for quite some time because they always specialized in niche films. Because of that they have a much more loyal clientèle as well as less competition from Netflix and other online sources. I'd be surprised if a large portion of their catalog wasn't even available online. They're also a great source for recommendations on movies that you've probably never even heard of.

evilnancyreagan: Ah you totally reminded me of this place:

http://www.iluvvideo.com/

the awesome starts with free beer tuesdays and just keeps flowing unrelentingly from there. makes me miss austin.
That's definitely the kind of shop I'm talking about. Just having movies is no longer sufficient to stay in business, you have to offer something that you can't get from Netflix or Redbox.

I understand, but still its a great shame that Borders died. I am surprised Walmart does not sell Books of Fiction you think the Young Adult Novels boom would encourage Walmart to sell books.

Wrong? That's terribly judgmental. I don't have room for all the books that I'd like to be reading, especially not when I'm travelling my ebook reader allows me to read books that I'd never have room to own.

My only complaint is that the prices are not reflective of the savings from going digital.

Yeah, Kindle books are only like a dollar or two cheaper.

Indeed and unfortunately, that seems to be the case at pretty much all the retailers. They really should be something like 40% cheaper than the paper editions as that's about the cost of the retail space, including a rather generous 10% for carrying the book in the ebookstore.

hahaha yup!

Like free beer!
I will say as nice as Kindle is, and it is, try getting an author to sign one. :D Yes I know it's a silly argument but as someone who has some very valuable books which are valuable because they are physical books, Kindle will always be a nice alternative but never a replacement.
