Cliftor: Have you actually tried Vista?

I have - on several different occasions actually. Each time the performance, stability and hardware issues were unacceptable, so me and my company decided to stick with XP. For UAC we have a perfectly good third-party software, and we don't care at all about Aero. There is absolutely no reason at all to move to Vista if XP is performing so much better. The fact that Microsoft has yet again extended its support for XP and that they're rushing Windows 7 is clue enough what they think about the "success" of Vista. Not to mention free downgrades to XP when buying new computers in retail stores.
Many companies implement DRM because they think the benefit is worth the costs. Many companies pay their managers $10 million, make 10% more profit then last year, and still fire 10.000 people.
What companies deem worthy has nothing to do with what we would deem worthy. So it's a bit silly to call others luddites. I would have the money to buy a new PC right away. A top-notch one. But...:
..it's really a matter of cost benefit. Is it worth the time, effort, and money to ensure compatibility...

to newest technology/games etc? No, it isn't. Lot of people bought a new PC for Crysis, and it still didn't run properly. My PC can run it on low-end as good as theirs on high-end. And, depending on what you set on low, like shadows, water etc., you do not even notice a difference.
Even more so DX9 <-> DX10.
They may think it is worthy, but then they shouldn't complain about low sales and people pirating their games etc.

They will change their mind, I bet the hell on it.....
Uhhh...it says it will only run on Dirextx10-capable GRAPHICS CARDS, not DirectX10 only...there's a huge damn difference. If you own any 8 or 9 series Nvidia GeForce card (or the ATI equivalent), you'll be able to play the game because you have a DX10 capable CARD, regardless of whether you play it on XP or Vista.

[edit]@Crassmaster: The article says "According to the few details out there the new engine will rival CryEngine 2 (Crysis) and support only DX10, have its own physics engine..."
it doesn't say 'Cards' anywhere. If this was a mistake, 2K would have come forward to clarify.[/edit]
I use Vista at Polytech, and it's not the spawn of Satan than a lot of people have made it out to be; in fact it has some quite nice features like the searchable Start Menu, and 'bread crumbs' in the address bar.
However, I'm not going to put it on my home machine for three reasons; 1) XP consumes less resources, giving the games more RAM and CPU cycles. 2) Vista's nice and all, but the benefits don't outweigh the cost; there's nothing epic enough about it that makes it worth $NZ500. 3) Windows 7 is due out mid next year, promising a better UAC, performance tweaks, and other [url=http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/windows_7.asp]features.
Back on topic: 2K have shot themselves in the foot, having learned nothing from Microsoft's similar debacle with Halo- no one in their right mind is going to upgrade their OS just to play a game, especially when there's an even better OS just around the corner.
Now I know MS have officially ended support for XP, but while it's user base is still massive, it's silly to chop that portion of their sales.
And what's the bet that they'll blame poor sales on piracy and not lack of XP support? *sighs*

You sure about that?

Well I agree that it's a dumb move to make it DX10 only considering Vista's adoption, and money vs features is a perfectly good reason to not get Vista. I'm just saying I don't think it's the steaming pile of feces most people seem to think.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I know many people that use Vista and have no issues, and they love it. I just have no need at this time to upgrade to it. I'm thinking I'll look at Windows 7, but even then, there will need to be a compelling reason for me to migrate to it before I shell out the cash for it.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. People spend lots of money on hardware just to play favourite games...
And now they said game will support DX 9.0c and Windows XP. Lol Worthplaying.

i bought two new computers because my old one crashed (I got a smokin' deal on my laptop).

they both came with vista, but I put xp on my laptop.
experimenting with a quadcore and vista, I think it should be good enough.
