Here, you can get it for 30...

Meh, nothing to get your knickers in a twist about: digital distribution, aside from the occasional crazy sale, is really rather expensive. I say Fallout 3 GotY for £10 (or 2 for £15) in a brick-and-mortar store (shock horror gasp) a couple of days ago, and Steam put the same game on special offer for £15. Call me what you like, but I fail to see where any digital version is £5 more than the respective retail version (aside from Steamwork'd and Stardock published games, but that's for another thread).
It's extortion.
They have to play the part ;)
Ahh quit your bitching and realise how lucky you are. Australians get charged 63 euros for it!
Geez, can't you guys order internationally from Amazon in a country that has a sane price for games (even with international shipping I bet you'd save)? I've ordered books from Amazon.co.uk before, despite having it shipped to the US.

I've only ever bought games in the UK or Germany (in case of limited edition games) and that since 1994. Games used to be 60 euros here while they were just 30 euros (including P&P) from the UK through mail raider. Heck, while small software stores had old games for 60 euros here in Belgium, they were already released for £10 or €11 in the UK on budget.
And Steam is ridiculously over the top expensive. So expensive I consider it an insult to get bombarded with "sales" that still won't even match the budget prices in Belgian stores! As a gamer, I don't want a company to pretend it's a great deal when they're blatantly ripping me off and because of that, I've never liked Steam as a store. Besides the fact that digital games often have limitations (for example, yesterday I tried to install OBSE for Oblivion only to be neatly told that I couldn't because it was a D2D version - note I bought it for 50% less than on Steam) it's just a poor deal.
Right now, Steam is only good for sales. That's it. Except for Worms Reloaded, I haven't bought a non-sale game on Steam for 3 years.
I get my console games through ebay from a place in the UK, even with a shitty exchange rate and adding postage, its still a significant saving from getting them locally. Much the same applies to PC games, I pretty much order online for everything but impulsive purchasing and "must have it on release day" games which are few & far between
All shops in the UK are currently a gem for gamers in the EU. You pay about 30% less (Civilization 5, Mafia 2 all 25 pounds + shipping ~ 35€) for almost every game. I always check at amazon.uk or others first. However, this might change in the future if the pound gets strong again.
Australia seems to be reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally expensive. What about customs? Would you have to pay anything from the UK (old mothercountry)? :)
Retail is cheaper on Steam in the US, let alone in other countries where retail shop prices are higher due to importing and taxes and such and then digital stores must match those prices by contract.
It will be this way until boxed retail dies, which will take a long time yet thankfully.

Not a comforting thought on my part, unfortunately. I have a nice collection of PC games in big and small box editions, and it's a nice library of sorts. While I know that it's unrealistic to drag this hobby for too long, it still saddens me. But as Bob Dylan said: The times they are a-changin' ".
I'd love to see some Steam sales figures comparing Europe to the US. But that's not something we're ever going to see from Valve, unfortunately.

Nah customs don't give a toss unless you start bringing multiple copies of the same thing (or very regular shipments I assume) in because it looks commercial rather than personal
At least the rest of you don't have Mafia 2 banned. Not that I'm going to buy it, but yeah it's banned here rawfles.
But I'm digressing, sorry.

Meh, Amazon's shipping for software is extortion. With the shipping costs to Australia, you hardly save anything. Great store, but they really need to lower shipping rates.

If you're not adverse to ebay this lot are the ones I usually get games though, games at about au$55 with $9 shipping
