Another crack in the armour:
Lulu was founded on the philosophy of breaking down barriers that prevent talented authors from sharing their knowledge and telling their stories. Our goal is to help authors reach the broadest possible audience by providing tools to create, publish, market and sell their remarkable work. In an ongoing commitment to our founding philosophy, we are making the following changes to our Digital Rights Management (DRM):

On January 15, 2013 we will remove the option to apply Adobe Digital Rights Management (DRM) to new and revised EPUB and PDF formatted eBooks.

On March 12, 2013 all remaining DRM-protected eBooks will be set to Private Access, temporarily removing them from the Lulu marketplace until placed back into General or Direct Access by the author.

Never heard of this, but good news.
Glad to hear about this. I bought something from lulu once that didn't work because of its drm.
Good news. I wonder how long Amazon will keep going with their current setup. With mp3s, even iTunes eventually caved, so might Amazon on ebooks.

Lulu is one of the handful of publishing partners for the iBookstore so I predicted this would first cause FairPlay to be stripped from iBooks, then Amazon would follow suit. However, I don't care what sequence it happens in so long as it happens.

That'd be nice, I wonder when DRM will be stripped from AudioBooks though ...

Yeah, me too. I still buy them on CD for that reason. Or there is always librivox.org for the public domain stuff.
Sweet, I haven't heard of these folks but I'm checking them out. Thanks for the heads up :)

So that means Lulu will lose a ton of books because of crappy publishers.

Only in sales directly from themselves. They act as a publisher on Barnes & Noble and iTunes, and the books are still available there (with the respective DRM system, even if set as DRM-free at Lulu).

... if I interpreted the discussion on the linked page correctly.

That's right. According to the blog post;
eBooks published through Lulu and distributed through these retail sites will continue to have the same rights management applied as they do today.
This just means I'll be checking Lulu directly before other distributors.
