lowyhong: @Zookie what (turn-based) strategy games have you played that are on GOG? And is KoDP the only game that falls into what you'd call unique?
I would not say that KoDP is the only unique turn based strategy out there (or even on GOG) it was just first in a long time to feel fresh and different. Let's see on GOG I have played all of the Heroes of Might and Magic games (These games really broke the mold too, but I started playing them about 20 years ago), SMAC (which was unique in its use of story tell), The MOO games (there have been very few space strategies since that have not tried to recreate these games, the Panzer general games, Fragile alliance (I felt like that was a unique game), Master of Magic, and age of wonder.
Many of these games were unique and fresh at their time, but what amazed me by KoDP is that it came out in 1999. It seems to me that many PC games after the mid 90's stop trying to bring new ideas to the table. Just refine and tweak games that have already been done. It seems to me that as far as turn based strategy games go everything that has come out since 1998 or so can be fit in one of 4 categories:
1. Games like Civilizations/MOO/MoM
2. Games like Jagged Alliance/X-com
3. Games like Panzer General
4. Games like the Total War series
I guess I should have been more specific, but I am looking for games that do not draw there inspiration from one of these game series.
Zeewolf: If you liked King of Dragon Pass, you should give Hidden Agenda a go. It's a much older game, but it's really unique. It's not too hard to understand either, and it's one of those few games where even playing a game where you're obviously losing offers a very interesting experience.
Oh, and for a really oddball strategy game on GOG, you could try Transartica. I've never managed to get into it, but the concept is awesome. Edit: I remembered wrong, it's not on GOG. It's on DotEmu.
I loved Hidden Agenda! It was a hard game. Do you think it would work on Windows 7? Tranartica was a blast too but I have not played it in years.
