I've been able to get good old Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen to run on my Win 7 computer, and for the most part it has worked just fine. I've reached the mansion (people who have played the game will probably know what I'm talking about, the rest of you have not been told anything important about the game).
Suddenly, a good way into the mansion, Kain started walking to the left. I tabbed out and opened a text editor, to check if there was something wrong with my left arrow key, but that was not the case. Tabbing into the game again (yes, the game runs just fine even after tabbing out & in again), Kain is still walking to the left. After restarting the game, everything seemed to work just fine, for about 2 min, then Kain started to walk to the left again.

Has anyone encountered this issue, and if so, have you found a solution?

Do you have a gamepad attached to your PC? I've had the same issue in the past, and found it was caused by the left analog stick of my Logitech gamepad.
I have both a gamepad & a wheel attached (and now that I look at it, my wheel is actually turned to the left). It is strange that these issues don't appear until after a while though. In either case, I'll unplug them and see if things work better.
I played it on windows 7 and had no problems, so yeah might be the gamepad.

Have you tried playing the game with the wheel and pedals? It could prove interesting, a bit like Carmageddon with fangs.

The main problem with the game is that I need to turn off explorer to fix the colours and make it run at a decent speed (if I don't turn off explorer, the game runs at a snail's pace)

I tried, but Mr Kain had an aversion to moving north or south.

Anyway, it was the wheel that was the culprit, so Wishbone was (more or less ;) ) correct

Yeah, I figured it had to be something like that. PCs don't generally start to generate keystrokes on their own. It's almost always a peripheral of some sort that's the culprit.
How dare you tease those of us who are less fortunate than you! You could have kept it to yourself, at least! ;)

I actually had issues with Medieval Total War (the first one) and an old Microsoft keyboard. It was the extra keys (raise/lower volume, open notepad, open calculator, those ones) that seem to have caused the problem.

Check your local thrift stores. You can sometimes find rare & expensive games there for considerably less than their actual market value (and sometimes more, depending on how they price games). Or was this one of those games that were banned/prohibited in Germany, and thus is hard to find? In either case, if you can find it at a good price, make sure to pick it up, it has stood the test of time remarkably well (even if the controls feel a bit dated).

It wasn't banned here.

We don't really have thrift stores like that in Germany, and the few that we do have almost never have games. We do have secondhand shops, but they tend to charge extortionate amounts of money for games. I did see Blood Omen for PS1 in a local secondhand store recently, but the cunt had the gall to demand €35 for it (I often see the same guy at local fleamarkets, and usually I just take one look at his prices, laugh and walk on).

No charity organization running such stores? Over here almost every single second hand store is owned by one. And they don't really try to get the most profit out of any single item, instead they rely on selling a lot of things in order to make money, and they don't worry about underpricing thing. As long as it gets sold, they are happy.

I think the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver game also has a bit similar problem with modern gamepads. I recall if you touched the thumbsticks or D-pad (not sure which), your character would keep running all the time from then on, even if you didn't touch the gamepad. I think one explanation was that the game was designed only for digital gamepads (also on the PSX), hence it is buggy with analog gamepads. I think the best way to play the PC version is to use only keyboard, plug out the gamepad if needed.

Another GOG game had the same problem too, maybe it was Urban Chaos or some similar game (that had also a PSX version from the pre-analog gamepad times).
