Red_Avatar: Graphics industry is not niche - it's massive. Besides that, even quite common software doesn't have a Linux alternative of the same quality. Most Linux alternatives are more limited and less professional. Stuff like Spotify is still not officially available on Linux for example. And then there's games ...
Do you wonder why Spotify is not on linux? (Hint: DRM :P)... I agree, there are professionals for whom Linux is not suited, however for most government institutions/home users it's enough.

MaximumBunny: moving from their comfort zones.
This is generally valid, not just for professionals. My first software that I sold was an ICafe manager. The first version had a GUI that replaced the windows shell with a custom UI and no taskbar, just icons. End-users hated it, the addition of a custom taskbar wasn't enough either. So I had to redesign and make it as unobtrusive as possible yet still secure and hard to get by (remember it was the windows 98 era). So I know all about users and their comfort zones :)

Haha, a small update.

MATE turned out to be too heavy for my shitty laptop (which could handle Win XP, but 7/8 no way).

.....so I uninstalled it, formated the partition.......ONLY TO SWITCH TO XFACE.

ITS FUCKING AMAZING, HOLY SHIT.

Looks slick as hell, works flawlessly, is incredibly fast and doesnt make my laptop overheat.

Now on to try out HOMM 3 and rock my new headphones (AKG K619DJ).

Now something to those wary of trying this out.

I am not one of the so called 'technical oriented' ppl. I just try to use my head and actually think.

2 days ago I knew nothing about linux.

Now I command you: sudo apt-get--Linux Mint Xface - otherwise, get the funk out of my face

LOL, on the XP even my touchpad malfunctioned, here its all great. Now all is left to test this out, but its looking good so far.

2 days, 3 versions of Linux. XFace ahead of KDE and MATE so far.

Btw, GOG FUCKING ROCKS. DRM free revolution all the way, cant wait for official Linux support.

Right now I'm downloading Baldurs Gate (the newly added polish edition :D), System Shock 2 soundtrack (in FLAC) and HOMM3 setup.

Lovin it.
nm, I was probably being unfair here myself.

MaximumBunny: I hate it when people attribute 'not getting it' to being lazy/unmotivated.
avatar
OldFatGuy: That part was completely unfounded and unfair.

The FACT is if you're a gamer, but not a techie, the only way you'll ever get to run all of your games on a Linux machine...
Eh? I was talking about life, not Linux or gaming. Like saying that because you don't understand rocket science or have a hard time learning it that you're lazy/unmotivated and that it's not because it's a difficult topic.
edited out, I was unclear and probably also being unfair in these last two posts.

It's just something didn't sit well with me from the comment up above about people not willing to learn something new being lazy. But my response was probably more unfair than the original comment was.

Keep in mind you need to get through the first 30 days before "committing" to linux. Switching operating systems isn't easy when your're used to a particular OS already. If you can get through the first month, then you'll be fine.
I used Ubuntu as my primary OS since 6.06 (I think dapper drake?) and moved to Mint after they forced Unity on everyone. I still dual-boot my system with Win7 and Mint, but as I found myself playing more games I was booting into Mint less and less. Hopefully as Linux-compatible games get released here and the video drivers improve I'll find more of a reason to use Mint on a daily basis. I hope you enjoy it!

Those afraid of a terminal and typing stuff like this, that want a nice GUI with a search mask can type "XFCE" in the content manager in the menu.
It's very lightweight, I also have XFCE running on my OpenPandora because of that.

OK, I am gonna be completely honest with you now ;]
sMy Win XP was broken because of trying to install Ubuntu (it was my fault though, I inserted a CD and accidentally started the install without properly preparing the partition - which is easy btw, ever for a newbie like myself, but that doesnt mean that you can just turn your brain off) , but since the support for XP has ended, I though to myself - FK it, I'm going Linux open source style.

I had tried various versions of Linux mint and Ubuntu, but all made my laptop overheat (tbh, its shit).

I've installed CPUfreq to control my CPU frequency, it helped a little, but didnt solve the problem.

So....instead of paying to the M$ $cum, I've decided to buy a cooling pad. I've just hooked it to my laptop and its working great.
The model is Logitech N700, I payed ~ 80$.

Now, I no longer have to underclock my CPU to 1.2ghz, but I am running on the 'on demand' mode. Without any strain, the temp is ~ 60 celsius.

During heavy workload - up to 80 celsius. It might seem a little bit high, but without it [the pad] my laptop shuts down because of the temperature (music player + firefox with 20 tabs is enough).

It has built in speakers (the pad), which are really great, I'm finally going to be able to utilize the full potential of my CPU (I no longer have to underlock it by 1ghz).

I'm running Xubuntu 14.04 - its way lighter than Ubuntu with Unity, or even Linux Mint XFCE [Xubuntu also has xfce, but its not the same), everything is working perfectly, WAY BETTER than Windows.

The speed, the ease and comfort of use, loads of free software - AWESOMENESS.

Seriously, I recommend everyone to at least try Linux, preferably Xubuntu, best one out there, for a novice at least (better than mint, better than 'plain' Ubuntu, or even Lubuntu).

I have no idea how much resources does Win 7 /8 / 8.1, but Xubuntu with firefox and Deluge (bittorrent client) is only pushing it to 3-5% CPU use, 23% memory (3gb DDR2 ram) and 1% swap.

I am so happy right now :D
It feels so good to finally be able to fully enjoy the Linux expierience ;]

OK GOG, the ball's in your court now - for gods sake, at least give me an official GOG downloader for Linux so that I could download my games at a reasonable speed.

OH, and if all of that wasnt enough, the Firefox for Linux is running way better than on Win, and the internet itself. I'm living in a dorm atm, and the net is quite bad - also, we have to connect through an SSH client (eg. Putty / Kitty). On Linux, I dont need an external client, as the SSH feature is already built in - and it works way better (lol, my netbook can no longer even connect to the internet, but it works great on my Linux lap).

I'd install Linux on my netbook as well, but it doesnt have an optical drive, and I cant boot Linux off an USB stick, so I have no idea how to get around to installing Xubuntu on it.

.....but who cares - my bigger laptop is working great now :D
Mhm, I gotta try me some System Shock 2 on Linux now - without overheating and with full CPU power, it should be working flawlessly on Wine.

TL DR - Open Source rocks, big corporations suck.

Right now - with Firefox open: 60 celsius.
Firefox + Video player (Chama na mulake -downloaded it off yt) = ~ 70 celsius, so all good.
[and the speakers are really blasting away, this pad is awesome]
