hedwards: Indeed, we don't typically take any sport that seriously, and tend to view those that do as being a bit dodgy.
I do, too. Unfortunately some of them are my best friends. ;)
avatar
cjrgreen: Sadly, they were then spanked 7-0 by Portugal, on national TV.
Good times ;)

Now we're painfully dragging our ass around to qualify for the Euro. Oh well...
avatar
cjrgreen: The team got off light: they were given a 6-hour public shaming, and the coach was fired and expelled from the Party.
Slightly better than the rumours regarding their 1966 national team being sent to the coal mines or whatnot after loosing 5-3 on the QF's, also with Portugal :|

hedwards: I remember during the lead up to the last world cup, the BBC comparing the national attitudes towards the US and the English teams. Where both teams pretty much always suck, but for some reason the English seem to continually think they'll do well the next time, despite all the evidence to the contrary, and the repeated heartbreak.

As opposed to around here where we're pretty pleased if we aren't eliminated in the first round.
avatar
wpegg: True, but I suppose it's about money. We suck, with some of the most expensive footballers in the world playing for us. You suck equally with a much lower collective value of players. We disappoint, you guys fail to impress (though you weren't bad last time).

It's a bit like if you made the "World Series" actually a world series, and then lost to Spain. Given the amazing amounts the players get, it would rub slightly to see a near amateur team beat you.
More plausibly, get our clocks cleaned by Cuba. Considering the open hostility toward Cuba that many Americans harbor, it would be especially fitting.
...but I thought that Kim Jong-Il was considered a diety. Does that mean that he wanted his team to lose? Why are they complaining about their leader's actions?

Joking aside, I hope they get better soon, if indeed this tale of a lightning strike is true.
avatar
Barnell: North Korea’s reason for the lost was….The team was struck by lightning!

Only the wrath of God (or gods) could allow the US team a changes for victory.
avatar
keeveek: I remember they did well in World Cup 2006 or 2010, i don't remember.

They're still better from Polish national team.
avatar
JudasIscariot: This is an unfair match-up. The North Koreans are basically starving and demoralized. The Americans are fit, well-rested, and they don't have to worry about being sent off to a labour camp.
avatar
keeveek: They would stil kick Polish national team asses hard.
Hmmm hunger vs. drunkeness and "kombinatorstwo" oh and don't forget rigging matches between teams. This is a tough call.

Also, since when was the Polish football league actually ...Polish? Seriously, there's dudes on some teams that can't speak the local language, never mind English. I quote this one quote I found somewhere on a Polish newssite:

"40 million people and we can't find 11 people who know how to kick a ball. That's sad."

Lightning just damn near wiped out a school in Uganda yet NK footie teams just laugh it off? Clearly the power of Lil Kim was with them that day. It's just a shame that Lil Kim doesn't understand football.

FTFY
I can't ever tell which team is good and which team is bad. I figure, whichever team scored the one point that gets scored must be the slightly better team.

Just a humble suggestion to soccer... Make the nets bigger.

keeveek: Damn, Polish football sucks...
Get GOG to send the polish national soccer players a free VR Soccer '96 copy each (while it's still on promotion ;)) :p
National pride/'support' for less than $100!
*chuckles*
